I think the SE had 4-lug wheels that is less than the 5lug so hah! lol
The 90 will probably have less miles on it and is more rare.

90 has more hp(160 to the flywheel), GXL is power everything, it has the color matching rub strips, circle tail lights, AAS( the adjustable suspension), i like the front end on the S5(89-91), clear front turn signals, the wing is better than the duck-bill one(to me anyways), shift light in the gauge cluster set at two settings( one for lower RPM, 3000+RPM, and one for Higher, 6000+RPM), the gauges are round instead of the pie shaped ones, steering wheel is three spokes instead of two, rims are different( not the phone dial ones) i dunno, I'm trying to remember my old 90 GXL. I am sure there are more things internally, but i'm not too sure. If I am wrong on some things or if I missed something feel free to correct me.

i would personally go for the 1990 gxl the 86 se is the base model while i believe the gxl is the luxury model. and also cause its a newer car and probably has less miles and wear on it. and i think from 89 on they have higher revs and more hp.

No such thing as a 86 SE, the 86 came in the following flavors:

Base (just called the RX-7)
Luxury coupe
Sport
GXL

Given then that the car you are claiming to be an SE (which was only available in 88 in the USA market) is probably a base or Luxury VS the 90 GXL, it would be hand down the 90 GXL.

Why?
There are a lot of little bugs in the first year (86) RX-7. Most are simple things like the clock is orange (the same color as the warning lights next to it) or the mounting studs for the hatch glass (which tend to deform) or the Logicon used tiny mosfets, etc.

And despite the over all cost cutting forced on the S5 (89-92) FCs, the 90 would be a overall better choice, just from that stand point. Yeah the suspension on the 90 is a little less connected to the road, and the car is heavy compaired to the S4 models, and don't get me started on the mouse belts or steering. Overall though the minor increase in HP and the less first year problems, make the 90 a better choice.

Now if it was a 88 vs a 90, the 88 would win hands down in a second.

Ah...well you know... if they had made the S5 better instead of cheaper.....

Yes I am planning on going to 7stock, just haven't decided what day (or if both days) yet.

Mostly for the things mentioned above about the S5.

Mazda got all the bugs out by 87.5, and with the 88 really made the best FC IMO.

+'s for the 88: No mouse belts, on average about 200 lbs lighter, better power steering (vehicle speed sensing rather than the engine speed sensing found on the S5 N/A models) cast parts for the fuel rails, replaceable PD, better tail lights (IMO), real metal end links on the stabilzer bars, tighter suspension.

See the 88 is sort of a cross between the 86-87 and a 89+. The 88 has the same blacked out idiot lights as the 89+, the same fuel injector impedence and set up (except the fuel rails), the parts are considerably easier to find than the S5.

What about between turbo models? S4 or S5?
