Talking 13bt REW hybrid rebuild with BNR II, ported etc. pics inside!!!

Guys i want to share the output of the last 6 month of research (mainly on this forum, thx guys!) so you can watch my progress in getting my project rebuild 2007 done!

i'll be posting pics of the steps done and to be done in the future.

Project 2006/2007

reason: apex seal blown in august 2006 maybe due to lean conditions in connection to quite high mileage of the engine, setup was complete exhaust, FMIC, SAFCII, 1000cc secs, T60-1 pushed about 360hp at 17psi.

goal:complete rebuild of the engine using an REW small block (because of the goodies we all know it has). using a not that terribly laggy turbo as my T60-1. goal hp would be around a daily driven 340 at about 15psi at the flywheel with crisp boost response.

setup:

REW small block (plates) used at 70'000km
new REW rotor housings
used but good s5 rotor out of my 13bt and used but good REW rotor
all internal parts are REW, namely eshaft, stat gears, oil pump...
all external parts are 13bt (due to proper fitting), namely LIM, front cover, oil pan...
all new seals, two piece apex OEM
1000cc did not prove reliable, so i ordered 4 times 800cc SARD's
Walbro
yesssss: STOCK ECU (please don't start bothering!!)
SAFC II (hooked up to map sensor)
AEM wideband
FCD
FMIC
2.5" exhaust with valve (noise control)
aluminium flywheel
centerforce street sport clutch
Koyo radiator
...

this is my TII vert imprted from Germany

starting to disassemble in my garage

exhaust system with external wastegate... goodbye... i will be going internal again

engine is loose

that's what it looked like...

some serious chrome flaking

got my Stage II from BNR... looks loke new

wideband from AEM

here a comparison of the 13bt to the REW intake area, notice the REW runners are larger and the mounting holes are about one inch higher up

notice the differences between the rear plates... especially the casting around the dowel pin

and the intermediate plate... mounting holes are going to be drilled

here the first attempt to fit the LIM, three holes were perfect, two had to be drilled. the LIM is now sitting one inch higher, meaning that several things are going to be refitted... but on that later

a friend was dropping in

i'll post mor pics later! enjoy guys...

Nice looking car, but why didn't you just use an FD LIM & UIM? It would have bolted right on without all the drill and tapping through odd spots. Then it would have just been a matter of rewiring the TPS. Would have allowed you to use a greddy elbow also.

thanks guys!! i was so looking forward to ending this rebuild from last summer to now!

to BlueTII: first i didn't have an FD LIK and UIM at hand and second i was afraid of having to match all the electronics and hardware of the FC. anyway the FD uses completely different injectors, so plugs and also impendance and fule rail ... etc. would have been an issue. and i didn' t feel very comfortable in switching from 4 oil injectors to two! i hope that was clear *lol*

i think adapting the LIM of the FC to the REW was kind of easy, compared...

now it's time for some more pics

here some impressions on small improvements done besides the rebuild

especially my home made exhaust valve for noise control! here in europe quite important to have a peaceful drive without troubles all the time...

and some impressions from the garage

I am not bashing your project, just being constructive. I understand if you didn't have the parts available and you just made do with what you had laying around the shop, but they are pretty inexpensive. There were cleaner ways to do what you did.

It is an S5 so the injectors connectors are the same as the FD, the impedence is also the same. Using the stock FD injectors it would have been 550 primary with 850 secondary. That would have run fine on the stock S5 TII ecu. Then OMP is a little more of an issue, but cosmo 13b-re pump plugs directly into the S5 harness.

You bought FD rotor housings which only need 2 oil injectors.

It is still a nice looking car.

sexy new housings So how much did you end up buying those housings for? I've been looking at new ones and about 2 weeks ago they where 450 bucks a piece and then this week when I looked again they where 529 a piece. I ended up getting mine from rhdjapan.com. for 400 a piece.

no prob, maybe you're right! i could only buy the blown short block of my friends FD so there was no UIM, LIM or injectors or TB etc.. so i thought it would be a lot easier to just run it with the stock FC setup!

i had to buy FD housings because the water passage is no more usable due to the LIM sitting higher up, so the passages had to be shut. as for the oil injectors, i don't think my two oil lines from the FC would be sufficient for the engine, 'cause the FD surely has higher flow through only two injectors. just to be safe i'm running it with four of them as stock in the FC's.

i think we'll see how it runs in two weeks
will upload the first start up vid!!

any reason you didn't pick up the housings from RHDJapan? Or you just didn't see the housings there? Anyways I hear you man having a motor with perfect compression is always a huge plus!

i like the 2 oil coolers, how did you plumb them up?, that can only help. Some people have said here in the UK that the stock TII oil cooler can take the higher oil pressure that REW puts out. I am going to try and put 2 FD oil coolers in mine as i'm building a hybrid but slightly different to yours.

Keep up the good work

i guess i've seen them, i don't remember why i didn't get them... maybe they were only S5's? maybe shipping was too expensive!

yeah man, i'm hoping to get some nice compression rates!!

guys thanks for the nice words!

yes the additional oil cooler should really bring the temps quite a bit down. if i push the hell out of it up some steep hills here in CH it normally gets extremely hot (about 150C)! and since the rotary's oil takes a great percentage of the cooling job, i don't think this is healthy for the engine! we'll see if it works with the two TII coolers. i've anyway planned on replacing the oil lines

some more pics of the car to enjoy

the new gadgets!

and that's where i always have to go once a year (about 200km from my home)

Not trying to criticize, and I know, to each his own..but..those taillights, with the black surround pained to match the car, looks terrible. Reminds me of stretched out Miata taillights.

What are you using the SAFC2 for? Tell me you aren't going to run this new engine on stock ECU and SAFC2???? Please..get a proper computer..

yes i'm going to run it with the SAFC (see first post: "no flaming about stock ECU")!

I saw it said no flaming about the stock ecu but COME ON! Your gonna spend all this money on new housing and ect but cheap out of the engine management? I really suggest after all this work you go through you should find some kind of management, in the end you will be much happier that you didnt cheap out on it.
