*Installing A Headunit*

Hello, I am in need of some help. This is my first time doing this + it's pretty simple so far, just stuck on a few things...

^ Here's a pic with the stock radio taken out!

^ Where should I ground this???

^ I'm having trouble trying to attach this face plate. Should I cut the parts circled in yellow?

The ground you just ground it to a spot on the car that is clean metal.

As for the 2 spots on the dash kit yes, you have to cut those two pieces out to use a non shaft style radio.

I've checked this thread and the one that I started and have followed the advice to the letter, but I'm stuck on one thing.

The main 'frame' has extra tabs on it. I've circled these in yellow. Should I remove these?

Since I couldn't figure out how to upload an attachment for this thread, I put the picture as my profile picture.

Where are all of your harness plugs? I have 4 or 5 in my 86 GXL.

The center console has a triangular plate of plasic located on both sides near where the head unit is being placed. These plates have a screw that fastens them in place plus a plastic clip or two which is part of the plate itself.Remove the plate and then pull up the carpet in that area and you will find a bolt which connects the front of the console to the body. This is an excellent and easy point to select for grounding the wire.

The car pictured must be an S5, because of the types of plugs and shift **** showing. S4's have more plugs.

Easiest place IMHO for the ground wire is use one of the locations that held the stock radio frame and will hold the aftermarket adaptor shown above.

See my sig for FSM and get the wiring info for the radio if you don't have it - to avoid problems.

On my 88 GTU I found two bolt holes on the top metal sheet in that area. The bolts were the super common 10mm top, the same ones that hold the fender on in the engine bay.

So far, I've found a good grounding spot just behind the ashtray, where the bezel is attached with 2 screws.

Whel pulling my s4's stock stereo with EQ, I saw something that I didn't understand. In addition to the four plugs, there was one more with (I think) one or two wires on it. Also, right beside the antenna plug wa another one that looked like it'd accept the antenna plug. Anyone know what these are?

The inverted antenna plug is for the antenna on the windshield. It was used to do something with the signal after market units do with one signal. No need to touch it. The other plug is power to your amps in the rear speaker buckets and passenger front speaker. These need to be bypassed, or new speaker wire needs to be run.

Rear speaker buckets? are you referring to the pair of speakers atop the rear suspension, where a strut bar would be placed?

Also, are the amps located in the passenger side of the dashboard, or in the doors? My understanding is that there are a total of eight possible places for speakers

2 in the dashboard
2 in the doors
2 in the headrests
and 2 in the hatch (rear strut towers)

Hmmm, maybe we all should compile everything on this subject and put it in the archives or the FC FAQ section, if it's not there already.

There is another good ground you can get from a bolt -- just underneath the shift boot, assembly, etc. -- I believe.

Everything is probably already covered in the FAQ.

You have an S4, I don't know if those came with speakers in the doors. Headrest speakers only came in the convertible.

My 86 base and 88 GTU did not have door speakers, so I am willing to bet its a TII or GXL only, if they have side speakers.

Unhappy

No door speakers for me. All mine has is the dashboard and rear strut tower speakers. I took the dash apart on the passenger side to get to the speaker, as per the haynes manual. What I found out is that the Haynes manual is dead wrong and omits any reference to the factory amps.

I downloaded the S4 FSM and it says to not crack open the amp/speaker combo on the passenger side of the dashboard. Since I can't crack it open, how do I bypass it, without cutting/splicing?

You don't bypass it--you replace the speaker with a new custom one. Also run custom speaker wires. I found this to be the easiest way!!

Instructions on page 2. Crack it open, haynes doesn't really go over the electrical system at all.

So what if this is an old thread...move on if you don't want to read. The FAQ and archives are not 100% comprehensive.

The FSM mentions a few possibilities. I've only seen door speakers on S5's. As mentioned, Headrest speakers are only on convertibles. Factory Amp on the front pass. speaker usually powers both front speakers. Some systems have an amp below the radio held in by the radio frame. The rear speaker amps are mounted below the rear speakers in something like a tub, which you remove to get to the rear shock. Some rear speakers are not powered there, they use an amp below the radio.

It's been a little while since I've read the Radio section of the FSM, so have a look (my sig. has a link to it).

At the urging of mike_merryguy, I chose to take the simplest route and run a short length of wire from the antenna 12v+ to the Amps' 12v+ line and all three amps fired up with no troubles.

Many thanks to all that have contributed.

However, I think the amps were designed for like, 5 watts. Your new Unit is probably putting out 20 or so.

hD RADIO ON VET with original amps and spekers

I just st install a JVC radio on my vet, first the 2 screws on the bottom of the original unit are conected to ground so I use a conector there for my ground, the front speakers I conected to the original speakers , I use the ant sigmal from the radio HD to power a small doble pole relay one setion of the relay is to grund the signal for the antena mast ,
Yhe other section of the relay gives 12 volts to the wooofer speaker amp and the head rest amp this is a control voltage for the amps if they dont see this voltage they dont turn on so works perfect with the original speakers and i have full control of the headrest amp from the console controls,
Tenenber that this new radios has mosfet semiconductors on the output so the speker line is floating at 6 volts if it is a ground on the speaker line they blow out ,so conect the grund first on the radio I did so witjth the boottom original screw.
Fabulus radio this HD I hope they continus this transmisions wiouth many comercials .( this can change)

For the longest time I've been interested in wiring my vert speaker controls into aftermarket amps. I was told it's just not possible and at the time (3 yrs ago) it was explained to me why by an car stereo/alarm repair tech. After a few years time, I don't remember what that reasoning was. As a work around I've always simply wired my headrest speakers into the rear channel of my headunit and used the fader to control volume. Is there anyway to get my aftermarket amps controled thru the factory headrest speaker controls? I'm doing a forum search now, but coming up empty. I may start a new thread about it.
