It's best to have a portfolio. Most sponsors are looking for advertising so you better be pretty good at drifting and you better have a car worthy of car shows. Also, most sponsorships don't sponsor 100% and you have to fulfill contractual obligations. Good luck!

First off. Its sponsorship and sponsors. Sorry had to correct ya. Secondly, obtaining a sponsor is very difficult. You and your car must be marketable, and pretty much waht sakura said. lol. beat me to it.

I went around to local shops showing them how it could be marketable for them to be my sponsor. Then again I was already someone around here at least that was semi know to the auto sports world. This makes it easier when you have at least a small amount of either wins or finishes in the top.

See my second post here:

Also, don't fall for the scams that are co-ops disguised as sponsors. A real sponsor does not charge you money. Typical scam here:
http://www.teamscp1.com/index.aspx

Mazda will sponsor you with slightly reduced pricing on parts if you enter actual races or autocross events. You can be the slowest driver on the track and still get the sponsorship.

This is just my view point first off so I'm sure others can chime in on their own experiences...but I am currently fulfilling a sponsorship with a number of companies. I'm basically just a show car for now since one of my sponsors deals with paint care products. I believe attitude, knowledge, and proposal set up are key once you get your foot in the door. From my knowledge most companies really have no need to sponsor you so you have to prove to them that you are worth them giving you a break on some product. Like Sakura said, don't expect to get free stuff. Also to address the issue of a drift car showing...I know people who are drifters and do show their cars on occasion but here is what you have to know:
1. Don't expect to win especially with damaged aero and such. In either case, you'd be showing to promote the shop or company who is your sponsor(s).
2. The main focus of my friends cars are drifting so the show just allows people who have seen it in action get a closer look at some of the fab work that either they have done themselves and offer up to people or to showcase their sponsors work.
3. This one is somewhat more so based out here but at times politics does prove to be a deciding factor and you'll have to accept it. ( i.e losing to a car that is part of a bigger team or an fd with less or average mods)
Finally I'd like to add that Mazdaspeed's program is awesome for grassroot type racers. Look into it and it'll help you out a lot especially with cost of getting replacement stuff for your car. GL and I hope my novel helped....

word, i got some background with a few companies.. From a company point of view, you dont wanna sponsor someone who just wants free parts for their pleasure.. For them its an investment. Its best to have a car thats already built up.

Its nice to know people at companies too, because sometimes they may need a test car for parts. The R&D guy will call the person he knows who has what if they need it. Ive almost got a set of coilovers from tein back in the day since they where looking for a 240sx, but the guy thought i had a s14 *i had an s13 so no go*.

I know a few drifters who get tire sponsorships. Again though, it helps to live close to the companies so they can actually meet you.

Build a portfolio. Show them that they can make money off you. and dont be cocky, be open minded.

Be willing to not drive your car on the street..

To sum things up:

Have a plan
Have a detailed portfolio
Sell yourself, sell the car
Network, network, network
Don't expect free stuff
Do expect to put decals/stickers on your car
Do expect to go to a certain amount of events per year

It's better if you know some people. The stereo shop I used to work at would hook people up if they were willing to go to shows with the shop, we'd knock a few hundred bucks off the build. Close friends and people we knew pretty well got super hook up deals, and we'd get them parts for cost.
