scam?
ok so i found out a guy in the sacramento area that builds mazda motors, and i hear that he builds race motors. his name is bill (i dont know his last name). but anyway i gave him a call about doing a rebuild for me and off the bat he told me that i needed a new wiring harness? and that he needed my VIN# and date of production? ive never had my engine worked professionally before but i dont see why he needs all of my info. but yeah i was wondering if you guys had some thoughts on this or have had any work done with him. im leaning to getting my rebuild by him because all the rotary shops are TOO FARRR!

This make no sense at all. The AE did not have any special harness that protected it from engine heat. I couldn't tell you over the phone, without looking at your car that you need a harness or any other parts. There is no need for your VIN to give you a quote. Year and model and what you are looking to have done, is all that is needed.

i just wanted a quote on a rebuild because a guy i bought some springs off of said that he built mazda motors for a living. i know i was a little puzzled myself when he asked for all of that info. and it was funny because he said "you will need a new wiring harness...unless its a 10ae of course" and when i told him it was a 10ae he flipped out and was in disbelief. but yeah i probably wont be getting a rebuild from him

Yea.... Unless you were having weird problems that might be indicative of an engine harness, then there's no reason on earth to replace it. [Ok, maybe one reason: If you were rich and just liked having newer parts for longevity ^_-]
If you have a garage space you should consider rebuilding the engine yourself. It's actually pretty easy to do and no where near as difficult as "engine rebuild" sounds. ^_^

You can watch the entire process to assemble an engine with new seals there.

billy kohlter? dont think i spelt it right but yea he builds alot of race motors round here, seen gt-2 fc's and plenty of old Pro7 motors by him. i have also personally worked on a 12a he built, and he builds some pretty strong motors, also talk to airquin23, he had his motor built by him i think. ive only met him once but have heard you cant talk about bill and not mention beer, so maybe you caught him after a couple to many lol.

i have never heard of him, unless he was the guy who built them for rotary warehouse, which is now out of business.
the harnesses are a crap shoot and usually can use some love but the fact that he sais it definitely needs a new harness is BS.
i do pickup and delivery trips out that way periodically, if you are interested and not in a huge hurry. i used to build most of the local engines out there but moved.
