There's really no need, nor any advantage, to running the intake all the way across the rad to site the filter where the overflow used to be.
Stick it right as the tube transitions into the nose area and you'll be fine.
Clearly, you've been scouring the junkyard, there are plenty of shorter rubber snorkels to be had. Fords in particular have been a rich source of rubber intake widgets...worth a look.
I approve of the concept and can assure you that it works, mine's been set up exactly like that for three years now.
