overpriced S5
overpriced S5
I know this link will be dead in a while, but while it's live...

I could tell it was overpriced at $3966, but was curious anyway. Just looking at the pics, I could tell it had prob been repainted (telltale orange vs. red mismatch on front bumper). I was already suspect of the mileage (74k for a 20 year old car seems strange). with those "low" miles, it should be in pristine condition at that price. I almost laughed when I got in it.
(now keep in mind that all these "problems" can be normal for a 1990 FC, but for $3966, they shouldn't be there:
* Sunroof motor shot
* Windshield broken
* spoiler almost cracked in half
* auto seatbelts not working
* A/C didnt' kick in (could be fuse, but didn't bother)
* "Add Coolant" light was on, but no buzzer (resevoir had coolant)
* rust in several places
* shitty repaint job (had peeling clearcoat on the FTP lenses
)
* Shifter cover broken (could see down to top of tranny)
* clock sorround broken
* wiper relay dead (classic "low speed only" symptom)
* wiper arms almost 100% rust exposed
* seats all cracked and stuffing exposed
So I took it for a quick spin. It actually ran pretty smooth, so maybe the miles are correct. I got back, told the guy it was way overpriced. In typical used car salesmen fasion, he started in on the usual dialog:
Dude: "well, we can do some talking. I have some wiggle room here"
Me: "I doubt you have as much wiggle room as you need to get this priced correctly"
Dude: "Well, we have somebody already looking at it"
Me: "good luck with that"
Dude: "so what do you think is a fair price?"
Me: "I really don't want to insult you. I assume for that price, you probably already overpaid for it to begin with"
Dude: "So you aren't interested? Not going to find many cars like this around"
Me: "If it was a manual tranny and an S4 not an S5, and if it had grey interior, I might be interested as a parts car, but again... I don't want to insult you on the price a parts car should fetch. Like I said, good luck with it"
Drove off in my 88 vert that I paid half for, and is in 200% better shape.

Rofl. I bought my fc in Springfield. From my older brother though. A lot of dealerships there in Springfield are a bit over-priced. I had 2200 to buy a car once I got my student loan money back.
I probably should've just asked pm'd you, but do you actually live in Springfield?
I'm come back to UIS for college in the fall. *_*

My SE is in the garage undergoing paint prep, so it will be off the roads for a while. If you ever see a white S4 vert with a blue top in Springfield, that'd be me.
Why'd you even waste the seller's time with a test drive if you had no intention of even negotiating? That's kind of a crap move.
Did you ask him why he thinks it's worth that? (IE recent rebuild etc). Seems a bit high but not totally heinous as a starting asking price. Finding a 20 year old car in good shape mechanically is getting harder and harder.
I'd say Rock Lobster got a smoking deal.

he probably just wanted to see what it was like, the sales man probably asked him if he wanted to test drive it.
It probably wasn't a repaint, maybe just faded paint.
I've seen a couple of red FC's that were originally red but fade to slight orange.
Not only that but sometimes pictures and lighting exaggerate this fading a lot more that what can be seen in person or in other lighting conditions.
And the FTP's originally had a clear coat.
My S5's FTP's are starting to peel and they've never been painted.

If those are Original miles I'd have a hard time paying 2k for it. I know you think your car is worth $10K but sorry man. We're all driving around 18+ year old cars and your fenders don't even fit right. It's bugged me forever.
It looked like it had been parked under a pine tree for 5 years. When I opened the hood and hatch, there were pine needles crammed in every nook and cranny. It was like they didn't even try to clean it up.
I'm sure it's still sitting there if any of you want to prove me wrong and talk them down to 1200-1500. Or go ahead and pay 3000 for it and be a happy camper.
The car doesnt look very bad, and as stated by the test driver, it ran pretty good.
It needs a few cosmetic things that most second gens need.
A little work and cleaning and this car could really surprise people.
A car in this condition is obviously more than just a parts car.
Better yet it hasnt been modded into the frankensteins that many cars end up as.
The final selling price was never negotiatied so it is unknown and the dealer seemed
eager to lower the price to someone who wanted to bargain.
There is nothing wrong with any of this.
