New interior carpet

pre-molded carpet is super expensive, even on ebay.
The reason i do most of the work on my car, is because i feel accomplished at the end of the day for how good my car looks, and because i didnt have to pay a million dollars.

so anyways, today i was working on my convertible's trunk, and decided to use the old rusted mildewed carpet as a template, and go to the store and get some new stuff.

so as i was at lowes, i saw a 8x6ft indoor/outdoor carpet on semi-sale for 16 bucks. The carpet was graphite colored, and would look pretty good in my car.

then i realized i could do the interior of my car, AND the trunk

sweeet.

so pics.

Old interior...

Sample of the carpet i got from lowes

and the new interioorrr

All in all, the process was pretty simple, get carpet, cut carpet, place in car, trim as necessary. I happened to pick a harder carpet as it had lines in it that i HAD to make run with the car.

Don't dye your carpet. just go to lowes and work a little.

if going this route splurge and get better mats to dress it up. The carpet wont last long but at that price I guess you sort of cant go wrong.

It dont compare to a molded heavier pile carpet though.

i think if the carpet was the plush stuff it wouldnt last very long but it looks more like the kind of carpet in office buildings and those usually last for a while. im going to try this for myself maybe this weekend. stupid PO spilled coffee or coke everywhere and so the carpet looks really trashy on the passenger side. and its tearing on the drivers side.

You didn't really show many in progress install pics (how you went about fitting it). Nonetheless, it looks pretty good and we believe you. $18 well spent!

Make sure you have patience, and a super sharp box cutter.
Start at the back and work your way forward too...

90% of this is sitting down by itself, I did have some adhesive, but ended up only using it to make the carpet sit to the jute underneath, as well as the original foam padding underneath the stock carpet (which was a pain in the *** to get off!!)

I used a 6 foot by 8 foot sheet of INDOOR/OUTDOOR carpet. The carpet was super resistant to abrasion, and seemed like it would clean up easy. The carpet isn't soft, but its not the type you would get rug burn from rubbing against.

There weren't really a whole lot of pictures of the process simply I didn't make a copy of the stock carpet. I literally layed the carpet in the car, screwed through in a couple places to line it up, and worked from the back of the car to the front. Noticable places of effort are the emergency brake, and toward the front of the car where you rest your feet.

I really love the plain look of the carpet. It draws attention to other subtle things in the car. I do have the original RX-7 floor mats (as seen in a picture) but i am debating whether i should dye them black, or just buy black ones.

Its crazy how dying a dash and door panels along with new carpet can really make your car look damn g.

i did this same this to my car a few months ago but didnt use any foam underneath and it came out tit, yours looks a bit more natural with the padding underneath it though i have to say. i also reupholstered my door panels and headliner using vinyl and outside of the fact i didnt use a strong enough adhesive for the headliner (started to sag after a few hot hot days) i was very happy with the results!
