Nate's 91 Turbo Vert build

Project: Vert resurrection

Well as some of you may know, this happened two weeks ago. https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-non-technical-pictures-198/i-really-hate-deer-874865/

But anyways, I picked up a vert shell last friday, and I got my insurance settlement today, So I figure its time to start a build thread.

The shell is a 91 with 140xxx miles, decently clean, needs a decent amount of body work and paint for sure. Quite a bit of the electronics were missing, so I get the joy of piecing all of that back together.

As far as my plans go right now, it will be getting a large turbo/standalone, a fresh coat of paint, suspension, and the drive train out of my wrecked S4 Turbo II.

Any suggestions are welcomed.
More to come, and pics...

How much did you get from your settlement? Just wondering as I have the same insurance company as you and want to know if full coverage is worth keeping.

After everything was done I got a $6,030 check. I only had to argue with them for a week straight to get that, they were originally going to give me $4,800.

Well I finally had a bit of a chance to work on it yesterday. I'm trying to get my old TII stripped and out of the shop to free up some space, so this has kind of been put on the back burner.

After really looking at the car, I found it was missing the rear and charging harnesses, along with alot of other things. But I just got the charging harness and some vert s5 tails in the mail, so I got the charging harness in and now at least some warning lights turn on and the windows go up and down now.

The interior was bluish black, as the previous owner attempted to paint the blue interior black. So I got most of that stripped out and I bought a full black interior that I'll swap in.

Well thats about all the updates for now, I talked to the guy I'm having do the body work, and hopefully it will be painted within a couple months with any luck. And I decided for sure on sunrise red.

Once I get my TII out of here, I will be able to pull this in and really start working on this.

Here's some pics.

Well my TII is stripped and gone, so I got this in the shop. And, I finally will post my plans, although some might change.

Step 1-get all stock electronics working.

Step 2-get black interior in.

Step 3-paint and lots of body work. The drivers door is dented pretty good and the car has a few dozen dings. I am looking to get a gp sports replica kit, shine panspeed vented hood, vented headlight cover, and amemiya style cone mirrors. It will all be finished in sunrise red.

Step 4-suspension, rearend, etc. Right now I'm planning on racing beat vert springs with possibly tokico illuminas(same setup I ran on my tII). Of coarse it will get the S4 TII dif and axles. Then it will sport a set of 17" eagle alloys.

Step 5-engine. S4 streetported Turbo II motor. Haven't quite perfected my plans on this yet but for sure going with a master power turbo, probably their T64. Then either Haltech or Microtech EMS. V-mount intercooler setup. I keep going back and fourth on running E85. Also all the supporting mods.

Step 6-tuned. my goal is somewhere between 325 and 400hp.

Hopefully it will be done by late spring/early summer...

There isn't anything sexier that a turbo vert. Sorry to hear about your accident, but this will be your second chance.

Hey nate, I sent you the harness today, i forgot your name so I put Dwayne on it, haha.

Good luck with the build.

PS: Be VERY Happy about the gas tank in this car, it is nearly spotless inside. I was about to install a walbro that I got from a friend, and my TII's gas tank looks like someone **** inside of it.

PS: for better or for worse, this is my old car, thanks for helping me get rid of it.

Thanks for the comments.

Well over the last few days I have bought a new shine auto panspeed style vented hood, authentic amemiya cone mirrors, corksport vented headlight cover, and I also picked up a nardi classic steering wheel with a FC hub for a very good price. Just got to wait for it all to get here...

I have all the rest of the blue interior and the chopped rear harness out of the car, still waiting on the rest of the black interior and new rear harness to show up. So I am pretty much out of stuff to do until parts start showing up, so I decided on tacking on a project I thought I would never have the patients for, which is polishing my upper intake mani.

More pics to come when I get some parts!

question:

why did you feel the need to go back to a power top? It adds weight, motors can go out (mine worked but still...)

And also, did you make sure to get the proper harness? This car came with the top switch on the center console, since it was an airbag car originally, so I hope the harness you got works...

^Well my main goal with this car is not light weight and speed, my goal is to have a nice, quick, full interior with all the comforts that came stock(except A/C). I'm not too worried about reducing weight as it is a convertible and will be very heavy even with things taken off, if I wanted light weight, I would of built a base model. I figure rather than remove stuff that I would prefer to keep, just make more power to move the extra weight.

I see.

between removing the airbag system, top motors, and a lot of other stuff like stock exhaust, emissions, cats, sound deadening, a/c, etc I actually got the weight down quite a bit.

I like what you are doing. I did a similar swap and kept all of the creature comforts including AC.

As for weight, my 89 vert was listed at 3003 lbs. With the TII swap installed I had it weighed, 3073.

I realize that is more than a base but not that much more than a 89-91 TII.

Plus the increase in HP and torque is so much more than a stock na that the vert seemed like a completely different car.

Well...

I found a good deal on a 87 base model with the motor pulled out, very straight body, and perfect interior besides for the seats. I picked that up being it was close by, and I decided to build that as it will need much less then the vert will. My body guy didn't seem too happy with all the body work that the vert needed, so he should be happy to see the new one. Kind of hate to give up on this, but it will save me quite a bit of money in the long run.

Anyways the vert is getting parted out, so if you need anything off it, PM me.
