3D Printing Archiving?

I was thinking the other day..

With the 3D Printing and Scanning becoming as large as they are in the mainstream, consumer space, it'd be extremely convenient to start creating archives of 3d models of interior pieces and such for our cars. That way we could print off pieces as needed, considering their rarity at this point.

Any thoughts or ideas?

I think this is a REALLY good idea. My boss is obsessed with 3D printing, and shows me videos all the time.

that **** is the real deal!

we're working on the ability to scan in the pieces into something like solidworks. once you get it into the computer, hitting print is easy. so it turns out the trick is getting it into the computer.

I'm going to start contacting local places that offer 3D Scanning to see what sort of costs I'd be looking at.

I've been hoping someone would do this for 1st, as well as 2nd gen cars. A lot of the plastic interior pieces on the 1st gens are not available any more. I'm sure that 2nd gens will soon have the same problem.

Yea, I really wanted to get my pieces scanned before I did my interior swap in a month or so, I contacted a local company, they quoted me $1500/day of scanning, which was just way too much for me. So, if I find something reasonable, I'll probably do it, and release the files to you guys.
