spare tire and audio in 1989 RX7 convertible
Got this car without the spare. There's room in the back wall for a small one. The book makes it look like it's under the convertible roof.
Huh?
Also.. radio works in front door speakers but the CD, cassette tape and headphone speakers are OFF. Book is not a lot of help.
Happy to talk to you if you have wisdom!

He has the Type 1 radio that came in the vert. the CD and Tape deck with the AE system.
when you put a tape in, it flashes tape and does nothing.
when you put a CD in, it thinks for a second and then spits it out.
radio works fine.
headrest speakers don't put out sound.
that last one could be the amp maybe, but the speaker controls in the switch panel below the shifter lights up, and i confirmed the harnesses are plugged in.
Alright then, first thing I have for you is the forum post that has been going on for quite some time. https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generati...ssues-1148850/
The problem with the tape deck is likely that the belts have rotted and the thing can't turn. I've opened up a few of these and the belts turned to goo with age. I found replacement packs on ebay, just make sure to measure and get a kit that has what y ou need. As far as the CD player goes, my post above should describe my frustrations attempting to make it work. If you have a competent electronic repair shop around, I'd have them try to get it working. I have the manuals for both revisions of the CD unit if you need them, as well as the door sub amplifier. All of those were made by Pioneer and have at least competent repair manuals.
For the headrest speaker issue, I would first start by cleaning and testing the headrest speaker switches for continuity. Second, that amp is absolutely over-due for a capacitor replacement, as is every electronic module in the car. I have been unable to find the manual for the headrest speaker amp. The head units were made by Pioneer, as were the door woofer amps (both of which are due for capacitor replacement), but the headrest amp was made by Panasonic. The speakers could be shot but you guys will have to test that. It would also be worth measuring the pins at the amplifier to make sure it is getting power, amp turn-on signal from the head unit, and audio. As far as audio delivered to the headrest amp, the convertible AE unit only sends line-level audio (low voltage) to the amplifier so it can turn it up for the headrests. The coupe AE unit sends full power to the rear speakers.
