^Kind of a thread highjack question - does any option exist to retrofit an SMG (paddle shift) 6 speed transmission on a 20B FD? I've always had this in the back of my mind as a cool conversion.

Any ideas?

I think it is certainly doable with enough time, money, AND patience. Most of these systems are controlled by a stand alone transmission computer that is tied into the engine computer via a CAN stream. Pectel and Motec both have CAN connections. I know someone that is installing a Pectel in a new BMW M5, so I assume they have developed software to interface with the SMG system.

^Yes, but not quite what I'm after unless I missed something. I don't want to use an auto FD transmission and retrofit it. What I want is something that can support a 20B at about 600 or so WHP, be a 6 speed transmission and also an SMG paddle shift type. Something like what's in the BMW M3.

I'd love to have this in my car and paddle shift my way around town. That would be cool!

The main problem you guys will have with the supra tranny is the final drive ratio. The RX7 has the 4.10, 3.90 or 4.30. The Supra has a 3.20!! Your car will drive like a tractor trailor.

Actually only 1st gear would be really low.
2nd through 6th would be just fine and 6th would be better than a T-56 whose 6th gear is useless except for saving gas. Even 5th in the T-56 is too tall imho, at least in relation to it's 4th gear.

Besides, that is a non-issue for anyone like myself using the Cobra 8.8 diff and its available r&p options
Not to mention the better PPG gearset available.

To answer your question (which is a VERY valid point btw):

I think most ppl missed it the first time they read his post, so you're not alone

Dave, good points. If the 3.73 works out fine, I'm going to stick w/ that. But ONLY AFTER I feel that it's inadequate would I go through the entire hassle of changing to a Cobra cradle. That's just me though.

Oh and call me crazy, but I actually plan on running a V161 (JDM trans), which has better gear ratios IMO, and switching out the 6th (which is shorter) with a USDM 6th (which is longer). The chances of actually seeing 6th on the track are next to none, and swapping in the USDM 6th gives me great gas mileage AND a great top speed (which I 100% plan on putting to the test hehe ) So you get the best of both worlds!

It wont be that bad cause rotary's have a higher red line. The Supra's transmission gear ratios are very close to the Rx8's. The only reason the Supra has the low final drive ratio is to keep the engine from over reving due to it's lower engine red line. None the less you will shift much sooner than normal but not that much. The below ratios would be damn near perfect for a NA 20b (except I want a taller 6th for the highway).

Supra Drivetrain:
Transmission 6-speed manual:
Gear Ratio Overall ratio (rpm) mph
1st 3.83:1 12.50:1 (6800) 41
2nd 2.36:1 7.71:1 (6800) 66
3rd 1.69:1 5.51:1 (6800) 92
4th 1.31:1 4.28:1 (6800) 119
5th 1.00:1 3.27:1 (6800) 156
6th 0.79:1 2.59:1 (5500) 158

Rx8 Diff - 4.444
1st - 3.760 * 4.444 = 16.7094
2nd - 2.269 * 4.444 = 10.0834
3rd - 1.539 * 4.444 = 6.83932
4th - 1.187 * 4.444 = 5.27503
5th - 1.000 * 4.444 = 4.44400
6th - 0.843 * 4.444 = 3.74629

Interested for our road racing track car.
Would this fit on a 3rd gen 13b as planned by CLR or modified but mainly "bolt-on".
We have broken 3rd gear (and main shaft at 3rd) four times now. Input shaft has been twisted but neven broken. All failures have been at the time of shifting to 3rd gear. New gears last 3 events and new gears then cryo treated lasted 5 events.

Planning on PPG but 1) they do not manufacture them anymore - PPG responded to an email of mine today with this info and 2) the explanation on the torque and case flexing makes sense and now worries me.

But on the case flex...?, we have never broken the 3rd gear right after fixing it... so there has to be something regarding wear and tear that eventually contributes to the failure... or we have just been 3 to 5 events lucky.

It there any other proven option to upgrade the factory tranny, has anyone installed a GForce with good results?

Thanks,

GUSTAVO

Ernie, so what are you going to do with your Mazda/PPG tranny now that you've decided on the Getrag

I have a 2nd gen and already have the Cobra 8.8 conversion (though not installed). Besides, 3rd gen ring and pinions will not work in a 2nd gen differential housings.

I
I may go auto, not sure yet. Need something more consistant for drag racing. The supra tranny won't cut it because the final ratio in a Supra is a 3.20. Unless this exact ring and pinion is used you'll be shifting into 5th gear on the dragstrip which would suck. And Im selling the PPG. I already have a potential buyer. I got the upgraded output shaft installed too.

Ernie, you're obviously going for an all-out drag car. I can't figure out why you just don't rock a G-Force or Jerico and call it a day? They're ROCK SOLID and you can get 'em in all different gear #s (4 speed, 5 speed, 6 speed, etc) and gear ratios.
