Question Daily Driving: N/A 20B

Hi, I'm pretty new to 20Bs but not to the Wankel engine. I might consider going this route, but I'd like to collect LOTS and LOTS of info before I even attempt. So any helpful, polite (or harsh) advice/criticism/input is greatly appreciated.

First off, is there anybody that daily drives their N/A 20B? What type of setup are you running and how convenient is it? Is it as streetable as your typical 13B? How much power is it putting down? What kind of MPG are you getting? (stupid question, I know, oh well). The more info, the better please.

I'm already aware of the costs that's going to be involved, and right now I might consider it mainly because I'd like to have something different. I know I can take the same amount of money into my 13BT and get much more out of it, but I don't think I could settle with it alone. I think I'll want (or need) that extra rotor under my hood.

Any info on a 20B non-turbo that is daily driven would be great. Specific setups and details would be awesome. Thanks in advance all.

The extra torque will make you happy as a daily driver. You'll wish you had done it sooner.

Yeah, it's sounding more and more appealing everyday. I will miss the turbo kick and noise, but I think I'll be happier with the more displacement.

Does anybody mind posting up pics of their moderately modded N/A 20Bs? Specifics would be good, too. I'd like to get an idea of what to shoot for as far as components for the engine; such as S5 rotors, FD water pump/alternator/pulleys, etc. I think I'd like the higher compression rotors, but are the stock rotors "good" enough?

I originally thought about this for my car, but the problem is that making power on a NA rotary engine always involves increasing the noise and emission output, which is a huge problem if you happen to live in (or later move to) a region that requires government testing. Since the stock 13BT and 13B-REW have almost no turbo lag, I didn't see much point in spending all that time and money on an NA 20B just to get the same power output of a $1,000 13BT.

Also, when I added up the costs of a nice 20B NA conversion (9.7 rotors, street porting, custom intake manifold, ITB's, custom header, etc.) it far exceeded the cost and labor of simply adding a downpipe and intercooler plumbing to a stock 20B-REW.

Yes, you can use the stock 20B 9.0 rotors on a NA engine.

Thanks for supplying those links. I remember reading that entire project thread for the semi-PP 20B FD. That thing is sick!

That's a good point about the government testing because I do have to get it done as soon as it's back on the road. I do plan on retaining my emissions equipment, but it probably will kick out much more than a stock 13BT, don't you think?

I plan on keeping the stock ports but investing in custom headers and exhaust. Power is important for a street machine, but not at the top of the "to-do" list. If I only wanted power then I'd stick with the little 13BT.

Thanks for posting guys. Please keep it coming in. I need to know more about all of this.

For emissions testing, how would an N/A 20B compare to a stock/mildly modded 13BT?

EDIT: gmonsen, hey I just noticed your post. Thanks for all of the info. Sorry to hear about Dave and his family. Was he your tuner?

With the higher compression and balancing, did it all go into a track car? Or maybe just a weekend warrior? It sounds like a really well done project. Would it be a better choice to go with the Renesis rotors or would the S5 rotors work just as well? Did you reuse anything from your 13B-REW?
