20B First Gen

G'day everyone,

Thought I'd post up some pics of my Series 3 RX-7 20B. Conversion is almost complete.

Engine has been rebuilt and extend ported. I'm running it naturally aspirated as first, always been keen to know what a n/a 20B would put out and was like to drive. Plus can't beat the sound of n/a.

The computer I'm using is a Microtech LTX12.

Exhaust is custom extractors to just before the diff then into a 3" pipe then into a single straight through stainless SelectMaz 3" muffler.

I'm still using the diff gears I was using with the bridge port, 4.4s

Excuse the dirty engine bay.

dirty engine bay? are you kidding me?????

nice job, mate. i'm curious about what you're doing with suspension, but the motor looks great in there.

be sure to update on how it runs when you start tuning ...

Thanks

Leaving the suspension as it was for the time being, although new lowered springs are going in. The engine sits well back in the bay, so should handle well.

Brakes will be left as stock S3 for now ventilated 4 wheel discs, same as the US GSL-SE I believe, using metalking pads.

I will let you know, shouldn't be long now before it is completed.

Are you using S5 high compression rotors or the cosmo ones?

looks great dude.....i actually had my 20b mounted in the stock 12a position of my 1st gen but after adding in the extra weigh of the turbo and cooling system the front of the car was going to be to heavy.......what i did was cut the firewall and moved the motor 10-12" back so the entire engine was behind the front struts....this created major problems with the shifter, oil filter and idler arm but it was soon solved with 3 mounting points and a little cutting of the tranny's tail housing.....what i have is a custom crossmember that holds the stock cosmo mounts and a custom 1/2" aluminium plate thats attached to the motor via the oil pan bolts... the plate comes out 4" to the front of the motor under the front cover to hold a GM square tranny mount thats attached to the reworked factory 1stgen crossmember that has a 5" center drop .... so thats 2 stock cosmo mounts on the rear plate and a new GM mount to the front of the motor....the factory 20b oil filter was sitting 2" away from my right knee , so that had to be relocated to the strut tower with a billet remounte filter mount (very trick billet mount from Hy-lube systems)...im missing 2 -25row mocal oil coolers, microtech and GT42r turbo for it to be on the road again...... it looks good mate, a good luck with the rest of it...

The motor does have extra bracing.

Dunno about the tranny but the gearbox is bolted up.

Setup looks nice. I noticed your using the stock 20b housings. Are you still using the 20b exhaust sleeves or did you swap them out for the 13b sleeves?

So the 20B essentially just popped in? What specific problems did you encounter? Oil pan had to be made? Front Mount had to be made? Obviously the Rad and such had to be relocated more forward? Any major project halting problems with getting it to fit?

Sump was a modified 20B item.

New 2nd gen mounts were used on original cross member, relocated, as well as custom front cross member.

Looks like radiator in stock position at this stage.

No major problems, just a lot of measuring and testing. Front cover & waterpump is from a 2nd Gen. Cosmo is much larger and overkill.

These will be the last pics before it is running, just exhaust to complete now.

Made a few changes, new twin core radiator was replaced with a new triple core, and am running twin 10" fans instead of one large 16".

This pic is of the new radiator, fans & oil cooler setup

Fuel setup (need to clean underneath up now)

Engine sitting in car finished

And again..
