best material to block transmission tunnel shifter holes?

I had to cut the transmission tunnel for my shifter relocation long time ago.. now that I'm driving the car for a longer distance, I'm realizing that there is lot of hot gas coming up from the transmission tunnel to the cabin. I'm worried for my health and added heat in a prolonged drive.

that brings me to my question.. I need to custom make a shifter boot that will cover up 8x4" hole which contains my relocation bracket. I need it to block the exhaust gas and be heat resistant. I tried some aftermarket boots but they are too bulky.. I wanted to see what people are using to block exhaust gas and air coming from the transmission tunnel to the cabin. I thought of leather, but it may be too much work to make it work. any advice would be appreciated. thanks!

Hunt around over on norotors for solutions. They have similar issues w/ the lsx swaps

That is a fairly large hole. Keep in mind that you will have road debris and other things attempting to come through it. Rocks, water, etc. Leather is likely one of your better bets. Then again, I have a welder, welded mine to a much more manageable size and used a rubber boot specifically for shifters after also making a frame from it to ensure a good seal.

For those who aren't too handy with a welder, another option would be to make a blockoff plate from sheetmetal, stick on some thin weatherstripping and bolt it on using the factory boot bolt holes. Not the prettiest solution, but is rather elegant and completely reversible should the need arise.

Also, a new shifter hole can be added to suit your intended application in a much more tidy fashion, allowing you to use the boot of your choice and mount however you desire. Just drill the mount holes and add rivnuts.
