20B Turbo Recommendation

Gents,

I am looking for a recommendation for my 20B build. The car has been designed and built for street purposes, nothing too exotic. D series with fresh rebuild, new rotor housings, full coatings, and a street port. The manifold has been exude honed and the throttle body has been enlarged. The engine is being managed by a Tec3R. The fuel and cooling will be matched accordingly. My builder is recommending a GTX4202, he says this turbo will offer the best combination of performance and streetability. Any thoughts?

I hope all is well.

Cheers,
Steven

I would like to see 650-800 HP, but that doesn't mean its realistic. That being said, I am looking for maximum performance within the bounds of reliability and streetability.

Thank you for the feedback.

Cheers,
Steven

Given the power levels your looking at and assuming your porting etc is up to the task your going to be looking at something along the lines of

holset hx55, holset hx60
BorgWarner s400sx4
GT4202

anything within that ball park

HX55 on a large extended port running 20psi should have you on song around 4000rpm and punching 700hp at the wheels

i'd go for the gtx4294 with a 1.05 or so exhaust. I roadrace this turbo with a 1.15 exhaust and its building rpm/boost fast at 3500 rpm. It makes 740 whp at 19 psi. With a 1.00 it should be perfect for the street.

I run the GT4202R with the Tial 1.01 v-band housing on my personal street 20B FD.

Really any turbo in this frame size will give you a huge amount of power with similar spool times on the 20B. The exhaust system and manifold will be the variables that have large effects on the performance of the turbo that you choose.

You can't go wrong with the GTX42 or GT42RS

Gents,

Thank you for the feedback. Sounds like I should go with what my builder recommends, which is always a good thing, but I like to do my homework.

P.S.- anyone know someone who is looking for a Hogan's Racing manifold? It is a semi-p manifold. I originally bought it to be used with my 20B but it is meant for a race car (no ps or ac). Since this is a street car I opted to keep the creature comforts.

I hope all is well.

Cheers,
Steven

I would recomend Precision PT7675 CEA. I run journal bearing and it is very nice on the street. Hits 15psi at 3800rpm on 5th gear. 640 Whp (696 engine Hp) at 15psi with a restrictive 3" exhaust. It is very neat and easy to "low-mount" if you dont want the turbo to be the first thing the cops look at when they pop the hood.

I am running a B/W S366. I have been very happy with the cost vs performance. It cost me about 700.00 and I dynoed 550 RWHP at 15 psi.

Getting a good turbo for the 20b is tough in the sense that in order to get a decent sized hot side, you pretty much have to accept a giant huge compressor housing as part of the package which is a PITA.
That PT turbo isn't to bad, but looking at the specs, it could stand to be bigger on the hotside.
I looked at some of the boutique turbo companies and they could do some custom work to make something with the rotary requirements in mind but the price was more than the off the shelf hks/greddy options, which give a decent hot side with a healthy turbine side.

It's the same turbine as the 42R 82mm inducer 75mm exducer. It runs a .96 A/r versus say a TiAL 1.0 and there is no need to run a bigger turbine housing for 600+whp Now if he is set on getting closer to the 800whp mark it will become a issue.

Agreed I think another option could be to run the larger 4202 with a smaller inducer like 4294. Those can be had as well.

yeah, the OP said 650-800, so thats the lines I was thinking on that the hot side would be tight up there especially on a fat pump gas tune.
I am going to try a vband 1.2 a/r hot side, goal is 750-850 rwhp.

This should work well depending on the turbine size.

HKS T62R ball bearing turbo, its like a compact Gt4508r.
Its replacing a T88-34d, with the v band adapter on a one off manifold. It fit perfectly, it almost sits in the same position as the FD T51rkai kit on a 13b. The downpipe and charge piping was 1/2" off on both from the 2 rotor.

COMPRESSOR:
-Wheel: 56 Trim, 80.8mm Inducer/ 108.0mm Major
-Housing: Anti-Surge 4.00" (100mm) Inlet / 3.00" (80mm) Outlet

TURBINE:
-Wheel: 85 Trim - 87mm Major / 80.2mm Exducer
-Housing: 99.1mm V-band Inlet / 115.5mm V-Band downpipe discharge
-A/R: 1.20
