wont rev over 3k

hey i got a 85 12a. the car starts fine, but if you rex it up to 3grand it just bottoms out and stays there. i thought it was probly the cat or a dent in the tail pipe so i cut off the tail pipe so all thats there are my headers and 3ft of pipe. thank you

Secondaries are supposed to open under load, and around 4500 rpm, right?

Again, reading is a valuable skill... He already told us he cut the exhaust off right after the header/manifold.

It's either fuel or spark, try to narrow it down to one or the other.

I would bet that it's fuel. Try checking your fuel filter, fuel pump flow, and the inlet screens on the carb first, then check out electrical stuff.

Sounds like a fuel problem, but grabbing a timing light when you try to rev it up, and watch to see if the timing advances with rpm isn't a bad idea either. But do what Keaponlaffen said first.

Sometimes a typo can yeild a cool new thing to say. "I'm gonna rex it up" is cool.

Check if Leading timing is even working. Maybe a coil or ignitor went out.
