windshield wipers not working
any tricks to rewiring the windshield wipers?
i cannot seem to get them working. fuses are fine, wiring looks alright. have not checked the motor yet, but it worked before i replaced the wiring harness..
any help would be great, since it is staring to rain

Mine stopped working a few weeks ago, I took the cowl plate off to check the motor and saw that the plug going to the motor was all dryed out and fell apart when i touched it. So I just cut the plug out and soldered all the wires. It worked for me. You might wanna give that a try.

i had to cut the connection to get the wires through the firewall and then soldered it back together. did not think about soldering it directly to the motor.. may try that.
thanks

If it just stopped working then it isn't the problem I ran into, just thought I'd share the problem I ran into though.
When I picked up my 7 the wipers would move about an 1" then quit. I thought maybe the motor had worn out and just didn't have enough umph to move anything anymore. I changed the motor out with the one out of my parts car and the same thing happened. Ended up being the linkage had siezed at one point. I swapped out the main bar on it with the parts linkage (couldn't use the whole thing as part of it was broken) and that fixed it! It is a real PITA to get that damn linkage out and back in too.

it worked fine with the old wiring harness.. just having toubles now that i put a new one in.. but thanks for the info alien.. i think that it has something to do with the connections. the one on the new harness if fairly corroded, so it is probably something to do with that.. i am running out now to get a multimeter to check voltage.

Anytime baby!
Check your combo switch....lil' bitches fail all the time. Mine did, first the brites, then the wipers. You'll need to take it apart and clean it up good. Search and you will find.
Right on.

Here's my experience...
Before I ever got my 7 running I tried the wipers once.. they traveled about half-way and then slowed to a stop. I took the cowl plate off to check the wiring harness and when I touched it it crumbled to dust. I figured that HAD to be the problem so off to the junkyard I went in search of a new harness. The first two I found crumbled just as mine did, but finally I came across a good one (must have been garaged all it's life). After soldering it in place in my car I tried the wipers again and... NOTHING! WTF?!! Turns out the posts that the blade arms attach to were completely seized. A little WD40 took care of the problem right away. Now I just give them an occasional lube shot as preventative maintainence.
(Awfully long post for such a simple reply, wasn't it?

lube did not help. i still think that the motor is not getting any power.
i unpluged the combo switch, and tried testing for voltage there. nothing as well. so either i am not testing it correctly, or the problem is before that. i am somewhat out of ideas.
is there a solinoid that the wipers need to work? there are a couple that are not connected under my dash (because i cannot find the connections in the wiring harness). one is the timer that the turn signals run on, so those run fast. not sure what the other one is

There is in fact a relay which controls the intermittant wiper function, do you have a decent wiring diagram? Let me know if you don't and I'll take a digital photo that shows the location of the connector on the wiring harness, that should help. -Mike

for those that said that thelinkage could be seized. minus two points for you.. that is not the case. it is definatly a wiring problem.
the only wiring diagram that i have is in the haynes manual.. not very good.. if you have something better, that would be helpful.

This is from page 187 of the Haynes manual, and shows the location of the intermittant relay. A description of the connector as well as the color codes of the wires are found on page 186. Good luck!

i saw that picture in the manual.. but it is a lot easier to find it on the page then while on your back under the dash..
if that were not hooked up, persay, could the entire circut have no power?

riffraff....I want my two points back because it was a linkage problem in "my case"...maybe not this guys, but heck, why not throw it out there as a possible cause. It solved my problem and aliens....later....cjf.....

i de-greased the linkage just in case as well.. but my problem is definatly electrical.. later today i am going to examine the entire circut, starting at the fuse...

alright.. i will give you your two points back.. but that is only because it was a valid suggestion. that and i got them working. i just took everything apart, cleaned all of the connections, and then it worked after reasembly
