Windshield Wiper Problems

Ok guys here is the problem...

I started to rx7 up this morning so that I could get her warmed up for apple blossom(oh yeah baby). When I started to drive off the rain started to come down. No big deal my sweet little ride is equipped with windshield wipes , Unfortunatley they would not turn on. So I drove 10 miles before I got to my destinaltion without windshield wipers. Once I got to my location I checked all the fuses thinking that it might have blown the windshield wiper fuse...no such luck.

Anyone have any advice on where to look. Both windshield wipers are not working and this is why I initailly thought that it was a fuse problem. Is there 1 motor for both windshield wipers are is there one for each. All my other peripherals are working so it is specifically localized to just the wipers.

My car is a 84 GSL-SE

Thanks,
~Z

Theres one motor locate under the vent/cover next to the hood. Look under that and you'll find the mortor. My motor died a while ago and I was forced to go to Pick'n'Pull to get a new one. No big deal though.

Locate the motor, then pull the plug on it. Check for power to the plug when they are turned on and that should narrow it down some...

Oh, and in the mean time, just to keep the car driveable, pick up a bottle of Rain-X.

The stuff is awesome (I use it on all of my cars, all the time) the faster you go, the better it works!

Anyother possibility is bushings that are flush with your hood could have rusted up. 1st check if the motor runs with when it isn't connected to the wiper assemebly. If it does, a quick fix is to physically help your wipers move. Gentle force will loosen them. Next try penetrating oil, (liquid wrench). Let it sit over night. Third, remove the wiper assembly and force the wipers' movement. Oiling the wipers' shafts that stick out of the hood should have been specified in routine maintenance.

Worst case is windshield wiper motor has shorted out.

Thx for the Rain-X tip Kentetsu

My guess os that the windshield wiper is bad. I teied to move the wipers manual however they will not budge. I car also has no rust so most likely that will not be te prob. Yep I might just have to use that rain-x tip...apple blossom is less than 2 days away.

How do you get the motor out?

Thanks

open hood, remove philips screws on cowling, lift wipers, pull back plastic thing on wiper shaft, remove nut, remove wipers, mark left and right wiper, remove round cover, remove, next shaft nut, remove spacers that are flush with cowling, keep track which is left and which is right, should be able to remove cowling now, remove nut on motor shaft. Disconnect arm attached to shaft.

This is a good time to check motor. Turn wiper switch on. If motor works, then you aren't screwed! If motor doesn't work then it is a good time to do the electrical trouble shooting mentioned above. Your bushings are rusted. Try to avoid taking out the assembly, it is a bitch getting it back in and a bigger bitch getting wipers aligned! Requires a lot of trial and error.

Try moving (not removing) wiper assembly now. If bushings are frozen or move with resistance use liquid wrench or penetrating oil and force to work them free.

If you have to remove the entire wiper assembly, the assembly has to be moved to its smallest position. The down wiper position will be lost. Getting it back in will be a bigger wrestling match. And you will have to find the down wiper position that corresponds to the electric motor's down position. If you take out the entire assembly to free the rusted bushings/shaft, try heating them with a propane torch before beating on the assembly with hammer and breaking those plastic bushings at the assembly's joints or connecting ends. I couldn't find replacements anywhere and had to Jerry Rig something.

Anyone know where I can find replacements?

As nice as Mazdatrix is, I don't want to spend mcuho $$$$ on a wiper assembly and motor. I think they sell a lot of them.

Good luck.

Wiper motor

The most common cause is the binding of the linkage. It is an inherent problem.
Like they have stated disconnect the linkage from the motor or just loosen the retaining nuts from the wiper arms and see if the motor starts to operate.
Mian thing to do is verify that power is going to the motor.
When all is said and done contact me for a new motor and wiper assembly.

Fixed the problem, I removed all fuses, put them back and just turned the car on. Not sure what the prob was but it worked.
