Will MSD reduce pollution and by how much?

I am thinking of getting rid of the rats nest but am concerned the engine will then not pass pollution tests. A thread claims using the MSD ignition reduces pollution, is this correct and will such an equipped engine still satisfy the authorities .

I'm not sure anyone here really knows for sure. The rats nest, from what I understand, pretty much handles the emissions at idle. The MSD/direct fire setup will help emissions because of the wasted spark and that happens at idle and while running. My bet is that removing the rats nest and going MSD is a net loss for emissions. Keeping the rats nest and going MSD/direct fire is probably a very small net gain in emissions quality.

adding msd to your ignition will reduce your hc. by 100 ppm , if your car is running rich like most rotarys do!

It's not wasted spark on a rotary. It's called simultaneous firing.

Adding pretty much any direct fire igniton system which has simultaneous firing on both leading plugs will reduce the nasty smell by a decent amount.

My MPG went up by 1 when I installed MSD in a direct fire configuration.

If you want to pass smog I'd really reccomend keeping ALL the smog equipment in place. Or put it all back on before the test.

yes it does reduce pollution and the exhaust smells fresh, clean as an ocean breeze.

If you disconnect the OMP, be sure to pre-mix some 2-stroke oil.

If any exhaust in Canada is as fresh as an ocean breeze you must be living near an offshore refinery!

680RWHP- I thought Mazda initially deliberately set up the 12A to run rich to get the cat working but leaned out the later model to get better fuel consumption- - - or is that another rotary myth?

Firstly : hahahaha! Its the first time ever that i have read Rotary and Pollution Reduction in the same sentence (sp?)

Glad we dont have anything of the sort here...i would never pass it! :-)

I wasnt aware that MSD makes emissions less, thanks!Learned something today!

Huh? I think my post count is correct. I just recently passed 2000. No way I'd have over 3000+ already. I don't have a sig on this forum either. Do you know me from somewhere else? PM me.

karis, pretty much any direct fire igniton system, which has simultaneous firing on both leading plugs, will reduce emissions by a noticeable amount... unless you've got a thermal reactor. Then it's kind of a crap shoot. You'll still gain more power since the rich running condition older rotaries are jetted for will be more fully ignited.
