The one in those pics look like the one I bought from Mazdatrix. Very nice quality, though I do see some problems with the underdrive on the alternator. Causes some charging issues with the e-fan, heater motor, headlights and brakes on all at the same time. And this is with a 2nd gen 75amp and 900rpm idle.

The basic problem with the standard setup is that there is so little wrap around the waterpump pulley that it threatens to slip and allow overheating. Increasing belt tension only hastens bushing wear, so increasing belt contact area is a good alternative, tho it does make space under the hood more dear.

But I think the slipping/overheating problem must only occur at very high RPMs: I've never had a problem, but I never exceed 7000RPM.

It makes more sense to solve the waterpump wrap-angle problem by using a double sheave on the eshaft and the waterpump and using a short belt that will wrap about 180 deg around that sheave. then the inside sheave on the WP is just an idler for the alternator.

They are getting very hard to find. I got one of the last ones from Bonzai about a year ago and my friend Mike just did a thorough search of suppliers but the part has been discontinued. So now he is hitting the junk yard looking for old chrysler products, seems almost a sacrilege to put a part that spent twenty years in a minivan into an RX-7.

If anybody finds a supply let us know.

yeah, but if its essentially the same thing and it works properly and at a fraction of the cost then why not? its like adopting a mangey old dog from the pound, sprucing him up a little and bringing it home to the family.

I dunno Dave, I kind of like that shiny cadmium look, hard to find on old dodge parts. But for those who are looking for a mangy old dog, here's what Mike found out in his recent (and ongoing) search:

this is just so I don't lose the specs on the pulley:

You are exactly right. The 86 chrystler had a 15mm bore alternator. And Dodge, and plymouth. Take your pick!

All had:
Mitsubishi IR/EF Alternators
Used On:
(1987-81) Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth
Unit Nos:
Mitsubishi A4T25191, A4T25199, A4T30399
Dimensions:
10mm Belts x 67mm OD x 15mm Bore

And here's what I found on the new dual pulley with a Google search recently (but again the suppliers seem to have run out):

Mike I'm sure you've given these guys a call, that's who hooked me up with mine:

WRS Atlanta
770-739-0081

or, another supplier:

www.asesupply.com

WAI# 24-83100

http://www.wai-wetherill.com/product...i_num=24-83100

And here's what one looks like spinning around:

You can still get the under drive pulley for the alternator from RB, part number 11479 for $53.00.

Jegs or Summit might have something as well.

Not to dig up an old thread but I just got my dual alternator pulley from Billy at RE-Speed for about $25 shipped. Thought I would throw that out there since the others are getting scarce.

Also any suggestions on the best way to remove and reinstall the pulley?

impact wrench is the best way to get the pully off. Otherwise, it is hard to keep the pulley from turning while you loosen the nut.
