White becomes Silver
Cool mj, I'm at 3405 Jefferson River Rd in Jefferson.
DD, the booster hose is fresh, I used my best one and cleaned it up first.
I redid the carb base gasket, which means I removed and reinstalled the carb, and that didn't make any difference in the vacuum leak.
So we are left with the intake manifold
Today's progress:

well, bad news, it turns out my diff crapped out on me sometime in the recent past. so the carb is the least of my worries. Anyone know of anybody that has a 1st gen rear end for sale?
and i hope to get out there sometime ray, just wont be possible tomorrow

Dang mj, you must have some miles on that bugger. What you got, the GS drum rear end or the GSL discs? What's the year? I'll check with the OGTA's to see if there's a rear end around.
Well good news, turns out I got that friggin' vacuum leak fixed. The engine is sounding good, but still some bugs, Cathy is going to help me with the brakes and clutch fluids in a minute. In the mean time I've been working on the driver's seat (thank you Crit):

Thanks Sam, we've been putting a lot of work into it, I hope she's around for awhile. That stuff on top of the engine reduces emissions while increasing gas mileage, driveability and horsepower, pretty cool, huh?
Ray, Looking good man. I am trying to get mine back up and road worthy by next weekend. We'll see. Lot's left to restore. Having a ton of fun though. Can't wait to see the silver one at a OGTA meeting soon.
Ray. It's kinda pointless to keep the rats nest since you ditched the smog pump and the cat. But since you insist on keeping it on there, I'll give you credit for having the nicest looking one.
you're really making a lot of progress here Ray! the car is coming together nicely. do you suppose the intake gasket was the root of the vacuum leak? do you have a nice passenger seat to match that super sweet mink oiled red sex chair?
Thanks guys for the compliments on the rats, I never thought I'd see the day you would find something good about a rat's nest!
Dave, yes the vacuum leak was the intake gasket, apparently one or both of the O rings didn't seat correctly. These were the ones from Mazdatrix and we had some trouble with them because they were slightly oversize, making it hard to get them to seat. When I put it back together I used a pair of O rings from Victoria British that were a bit smaller and thinner (cheaper is what I thought) but they fit much more snugly.
Now I have a new set of problems. When we bled the brakes, the rears came up fine but there is no action in the front calipers, not even air coming out. I've never had this happen but I suspect it has something to do with the proportioning bypass valve. I have no idea how that thing works or what to look for, but I guess I can start by swapping a different one in. I'm also wondering if a bad master cylinder could be causing it, but I don't see how that would affect only the front brakes.
The second problem is potentially more serious. When we bled the clutch it delivered pressure to the clutch slave nicely but the clutch won't depress fully and there is no return action in the clutch peddle - it appears to be frozen. Never seen this one before either, but I sure hope I don't need to be dropping the transmission today;
Any help on these two would be greatly appreciated! Once they are fixed on go the wheels and a test drive. And yes Dave, there's a nice passenger seat that matches the one mint driver's seat I've got (I have three sets of the red leather seats altogether, but the other two driver's seats have some minor issues).

on the braking issue, start with the proportioning valve. they can fail and seize internally, and can cause similar problems to what you are experiencing. ford had problems with this in the 80's. i would replace it and start there. i always bleed RR, LR, RF, LF and it seems to work very well. the master cylinder could be suspect but since fluid is getting to the rear brakes, i would look at that nasty octopus first.
regarding the clutch issue, there may be a couple of things going on here. first is that the throwout bearing may be hanging up on the input shaft guide that it rides on. the t/o bearing can rust and oxidize to the guide if there is no grease for it to ride on. secondly is a faulty pressure plate. sometimes they fail and can cause similar problems. i would continue bleeding for a few more minutes before dropping the trans and replacing the clutch. the trans can be out in an hour if need be so no worries there. you may want to call Crit for a hand putting the sucker back up.

well the rear end didnt go out on its own, my stupidity helped it along. I was test driving it around my house and somehow the drivers side rear tire came off. The only thing I can think of was about 2 weeks earlier I was working on the rear brake drums and must've not tightened up all of the lug nuts. Stupid I know, ray its the drums on the back, i want to upgrade to the lsd, but i would take any rear end that worked
