White becomes Silver
Thanks for the lead on the stereo unit on ebay Ray. Im going to try and bid on it and see what happens. If I dont get it, I would love to buy yours if its in good shape and works good. As you have probably seen, Im having some trouble getting a new old one to work in my GS. Just looking to upgrade to the GSL version.
Thanks
Thanks
Crazy like a Wankel Whisperer Sarge.
Yep White81Z28, the good old GS(L) conversion, my friend Mike has that (LSD out back too). I've got about six of those Clarion units in the living room, so if you need one, just pm the address.
Good news, the Silver One started, videos are uploading.

I spent the entire weekend swapping plugs on VQ35's; the wife's 02 maxima (arg, FWDs!) and my Z.
The maxima took 9 lower-back-killing hours, with a break to go the the dealer and get a ($200!) replacement valve cover as it was leaking oil into the plug wells & you can no longer just replace the silicone seals like you could on the older engines. Bastards. Plastic valve covers, feh!
The Z only took about 4 hours, most of which was spent trying to get the wiring harness out of the way of the pulg-top ignition coils without breaking anything (it was shedding dried-up wrap tape like a snake sheds skin). The 3/4" diameter harness runs right over the top of the coils, and was designed to install in about 30 seconds... but not designed to come out without cutting all the special snap-in tiedowns. & zero slack.
Working on the SA is such a welcome relief by comparison - - even the tight under-dash stuff offers more working space than the engine compartment on a modern V6, and the FWD V6's are just downright brutal. Changing belts takes hours!
Hilarious; Ray's built most of a car in the time it took me to change two sets of plugs.

Nothing like a greaser weekend, eh DD? Damn I love auto mechanics.
And yes, after owning VW's, 122 Volvos and MGBs, nothing beats an FB (or SA, for you purists).
Things are looking real good for the Silver One. I added the water pump and dizzy, along with the trailing plugs, set the timing, adjusted the Nikki and now I have a smooth idle and lots of Zoooooom. That would be Zooooom without much mufflers, totally awsome.
But she still ain't as sweet as the White One, I couldn't get the idle down below 1000 rpm and the starter fluid found some vacuum leaks around the block off plates. Looks like I shoulda' cut some fresh gaskets after all, will be doing that tonight.
She's cooling down now, should have the leaks fixed around dark, so look for a nighttime video. Here's some current photos:

Today or tomorrow I hope Dave, here's a video of her running last night. I'm still chasing down that vacuum leak, I ran out of starter fluid last night. I'm pretty sure it's the block off plates but I want to confirm before redoing them.

I still need to do the brakes and clutch and transfer the wheels from the White One, that should happen after work today.

I found hylomar helpful on my blockoff plates, back when I was using my header.
I'm diggin' on your patented BIC vacuum-line plugs, too. Makes it pretty easy to see if you forget to reconnect one!

So it wasn't the block off plate, I redid it with hylomar and no difference. Next on my list is the shutter valve, the starter fluid test gives a strong indication in that area.
Hey Marcello, how's things down there in San Antonio? You guys still part of the Union?
mj, we are rebuilding a friend's Nikki on Saturday, if you want to join in bring your Nikki and a rebuild kit from autozone.
NCross, you wouldn't be the very Zach who sold me the Silver One a few years ago, would you?

Last time i checked we were still part of it LOL! San Antonio has been blazing hot the past two months with 100+ degree weather everyday. Besides that life is good...I got my FB up and running finally! WOO HOO!! im just checking things over to see if i got all my electrical/wires hooked up right lol. One thing i can't figure out is why i don't have my TACH working....so i have been searching for that on here the past two days. Everything seems hooked up right.....but obviously something is wrong. She is running great besides that little hiccup.
Ray, do you still have the complete emissions setup on that engine? a common leak is the hose that connects the #2 anti afterburn valve to the intake manifold. over time, the heat from the exhaust breaks the hose down and it develops small pinhole leaks and eventually a large leak causing the engine not to idle at all. in the pic i have provided, i point out the hose's start point. on this particular engine, it looks to have been replaced with an el cheapo aftermarket hose. seems to do the job but i think i will replace it with the correct hose.

It would be good to see you on Saturday mj, get the GP Sorensen kit and come on over, we'll have a Nikki rebuild party. Here's the autozone part:

Marcello, I'm sure you've checked this already but if your trailing igniter is bad or has bad connections the tach won't work. That's the only time I've had problems with mine. It's been blazing hot here in Georgia the last few days too, after a relatively cool summer, but not nearly as hot as down in San Antone. Good to hear you Texans are still giving Obama a chance down there!
You guys are talking about this hoze here, mine looks to be in good shape so I don't think that's the problem.

And yeah if it has a major leak the engine won't even run. Yesterday while I was poking around looking for the leak I disconnected it while the engine was running and it immediately died. Thanks for the tip though, maybe it has a small leak and that's what's causing the problem. I'll take a close look at it before pulling the carb.
