whatchoo tink?
I'm trying to come up with a logo/patch for my company, as Matt gave me some good ideas of setting up a Rotorhead racing group. Nothing too ambitious, basically a bunch of guys pooled together to get Mazda parts at a discount
Anywho, here's what I've come up with so far. Comments? Opinions?

Needs a little darkness, but it's very nice for the prelim stage...let me play with it at home and I'll send you ideas on the PM side....I can't go anywhere right now...We've been frozen in here at SBC...in TX!! I'd take some pics, but my buddy still hasn't returned my camera!!

redrafted it. Here's a 2nd idea too. Both of these are my photoshop creations, so if you see someone using something that looks suspiciously similar in the future let me know!

Unfortunately, the "R" now means Type R as in Honda Mcfreakin'ricer...now that I look at it, it's obvious Honda ripped off Mazda, but that's what 800 lb. gorillas do....I say no way to the Type R Mazda rotor...barf...

Lemme subject you to two more (ignore the colors - working on the shape right now)
This one I tweaked even more to get a bit further from the 'type R' look

The very first one looks like a professional did it. All the others look like a gearhead did it (no offense intended). You have education in graphic art, don't you. If you don't, you should persue it. this is good stuff.

No training in GA. I'm a film director by trade, so supposedly I've an eye for things, but really I fumble through like most people
Personally I'm leaning towards this one, though I might angle the back of the 'R' top more like the 2nd black one...
Matt, that's some neat stuff! Only thing is if I shrink it down a lot of that detail gets lost. I've tried to simplify the design for that reason. I'll definately talk to you about some future design stuff though!

tiiiiiiiight hah
id say either moses's first black one or the last black on by mantis...
i could see the one by mantis as a logo sticker on a car or sumthing ....
but the one by moses would make a real nice t-shirt id prolly wear all the time haha
but black is the way to go

Using the figure ground like you do is cool. That is what a pro GA would do. Stick with that idea, and you got it. Rolloing82's comment about it looking like a logo sticker is a compliment.
Using the one-color scheme is good, too because you're using the background as one color and the forground as a second color. Much cheaper and easier to print, but looks like a three-color design.
You do have an eye for things.
I am a technical writer by trade, but that comes with a little bit of graphic art training. I know just enough to be able to recognize good art, but not enough to create it.
