Getting loud tinking noise from trans ?
ive read a few threads about a similar noise but mines a little different
the other day while shifting into 2nd i started getting this loud tinking noise , in every gear when accelerating , car shifts fine and runs fine i don't hear it at low rpms 1-2.5 but above that it does it unless im just cursing
i dont hear it when im not accelerating i haven't revved the car in neutral either so i dont know if it does that or not
from what i read it could be the bearings in there 1 has 1-2 and the other 3-5 gears .. i just wanted some other suggestion before i take the tranny out and see whats up with it
and to be honest it almost sounds like something it tapping against my exhaust or something like that

Sounds like you already located your problem. I'll bet it's either a loose heat shield, catalytic converter, or a loose hanger. Get under the car and start hitting and shaking things. Hopefully you can find it, but I'd be willing to bet it's exhaust related, and not inside your transmission.

hmm... i have only experienced this tinking or clicking sound a few times im my car and its coming form the trans. only happens in neutral though. but if you wiggle the shifter lefty to right it will go away. im not sure if the selector is not fully disengaging the gear and its slightly kicking it making the noise or if its something else.

First part of your thread made me think it was the rear differential mount that had broken. When those break the symptoms are a loud THUNK each time you shift up. Fix for that is to install a new "front" differential mount.

Yeah, but he said it was a "tinking" noise, not thunk. I tend to group tinking noises with loose heat shields, exhaust issues, or some sort of loose metal somewhere. He also said it happens when accelerating, not when shifting. That means it's happening under load, not when he suddenly unloads the driveline. Still, not something to rule out. I'm great at diagnosing problems when the car is right in front of me. However, it's a whole different story when the car's 700 miles away and all I can get is "it's tinking"
GreekDrifter91: 3 questions.
1) Does your shifter flop easily to the left, but has resistance going to the right? (broken 1/2 return spring, very common)
2) Do you have a short throw shifter? (Mazdatrix has a great explanation of the short shifter rattle)
3) Is your shifter pretty much sloppy all around, and you can put it in gear and pretty much make a circle with the shifter with it never coming out of gear? (indication of bad shifter bushings)

2.) no i dont not have a short shifter installed, but it just came in the mail though.
3.) yea its a little sloppy. bushings are on there way though.

You'll be surprised at what you might find under there. Found a freaking mirror on my trans/ exhaust shielding. It took removing all of it to find it too. Im still puzzled as to just how the hell it got there.

double check your drive shaft. My last FC made a ping or tinking sound when backing up only. Because I let it go for several months, it resulted in massive vibrations. The drive shaft cracked at the rear u-joint.
