Turbos Make Noise?

This is driving me absolutely insane. Tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink. You get my point.

Basically I hear that constantly except for under acceleration. I hear it at idle, off the gas, neutral, in gear, tink tink tink tink tink tink. Slowly driving me insane.

Anyway, looked at it today and it seems like it's coming from my turbos. I don't believe it's an exhaust leak as all my gaskets are new and tight and I can't feel any air coming out of anywhere. It's definitely not coming from the transmission. It's definitely a metal sound.

So my question is, can turbos make noise like this when they're going bad? I do smoke for a few seconds at idle, I know they're going bad.

Any help or suggestions on what to check would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Tink tink.

Sorry meant to say when I crank it in the morning it smokes for a few seconds, not at idle (or if it does at idle, very little).

how fast is this tink tink tink sound? Like several per second or several seconds per tink?

How many miles on the turbos? When you say you know they are going bad, how do you know this?

Several per second. I'm not sure of the mileage on the turbos. I have had the car for about 13k miles and the car has a total of 110k miles on it. I just assume they're going bad because of smoke in the morning when I crank the car. It's definitely coolant being burned, not oil or built up condensation.

Edit: I'm going to go outside now with a digi cam and try to capture the tink LOL

Turbos spin so fast, that any "tink" should go away, since whatever is causing it would get ground to a pulp... what is it like 40,000 rpm + or something under acceleration.... either the turbine would discintegrate, or whatever was causing the tink would be ground away... depending on the hardness of the thing that's making the "tink" compared to your turbo...

In all likelyhood it's not the turbo or if so, maybe an actuator arm came loose and is slapping against the side of the turbo !?

Dunno... Never heard of that kind of troubble...

You can kind of hear it in these videos. It's very fast so it barely sounds like the tink til it idles. Just turn up the speakers

3 possiblilites I can think of other than turbo problems.

A: could be an exhaust leak (yes they do sound metallic)
B: check your spark plug wires, an arching wire will make a ticking sound
C: and probably the least likely, but maybe its a fuel injector.

Lol i almost blew my little speakers out listening to those vids so loud. Whats that weird sound in the background of the second one? I hope thats not what your talking about, i could hear a ticking in the first one.

It sounds to me that you got a clogged cat or if you still have your stock down pipe it maybe also clogged. I used have this problem and it would sound like metal clangging on each other. The clogged stock DP was hitting against the heat shields or the wall its close to.

It's definitely coming from the bottom of the car turbo-side, so I don't think it's a spark plug wire or fuel injector. And I have aftermarket downpipe/midpipe, shouldn't be clogged. I jacked it up today and let it run and didn't notice anything hitting the heat shields. This is driving me insane.

LOL Sorry about that loud noise, a huge truck was passing by as I was taking the 2nd video.

Oh and sorry if this is a stupid question, but since it doesn't tick on acceleration, it shouldn't be an exhaust leak right? I mean, exhaust leaks should make noise on acceleration right?

not true. the pressure increases when accelerating thrusting the gasses past the leak...I know cuz I had one not long ago ;p....another car though so I couldn't compare sounds with ya except REALLY ANNOYING!

Rule-out the source.

Tip for locating/pin-pointing abnormal engine noice:

Get/cut a piece of water hose long enough to reach the Rear/Front Turbos while standing outside and next to the right fender. Place one end of the hose to your ear (blow it out first to make sure it's free from bugs) the other end is placed on the engine parts you think the noice may be coming from.

.....Kinda like a poorman's stethoscope.

You should be able to hear the noice very clearly ( through the hose) once you locate it.

I know you already know this but,.......make sure the hose DOES NOT come in contact with the Water Pump Belt (The belt in general!!!!!!) while the engine is turning. Take your time and don't be surprised if the Tick-Tick turns out to be an exhaust leak on the Turbo manifold.

Good Luck!

Yeah doesn't sound like good times LOL I hope I can at least find out the exact problem so I can fix it. It's been like this since I rebuilt the engine.

Check your exhaust manifold...

Go here for a diagram.

I should have said this as a lead-in to my previous post, but a tink, tink, or tick, tick sound is usually related to either an exhaust leak, or something being rattled by the exhaust pulses (loose baffles, loose actuator flap, etc.). that's why the post I referenced could be relevant.

It's the lower exhaust manifold. I had the exact same problem, same symptoms and identical noise.

That's why a I laughed because it also drove me insane.

I have the same exact problem, annoys the hell out of me. I hear it all the time except accelerating. I think its the control actuator arm.

A VERY strong possibility is one of the actuator arms on the turbo popped off the gate it's supposed to be connected to. Driving around, that metal flapper will be flapping back and forth with the exhaust passing through it - under boost, the pressure will hold it full open.

Get under the car and check to make sure all 3 actuator arms on the turbos are hooked up to the flappers. If not, you'll need a new clip to hold the rod onto the actuator.

Dale
