what is too lean???

ok, ever since i've had my rex it's idle'd at 1100rpms always. i've had roxy (my car) for only about 6 months now and i've never had any probs with the idle except it's kinda high. now that i have everything tuned up and replaced and she's running awesome i went out and tried to drop the idle to around 750rpms like it should be. i know it's a little game you have to play with dropping the idle then messing with the air/fuel but holy crap. i got it down to about 700 and it was hunting to die so i ran out and leaned it out a bit and it went back to normal but the idle went back up!!!! i did this again and got it a little lower, i was going to do it again but i freaked out thinking i might be leaning it out too much???? i would say i had the air/fuel turned about 6 times out from being all the way in. i was kinda thinking maybe i have a vaccum leak but i dunno. so i went pretty much back to where it was which i almost don't want to touch now, because she pulls SO HARD and is running great! i tuned the air/fuel by butt dyno and she feels so wonderful now. sooo, basically, can you lean the rex out too much? (sorry so long!)

p.s. when i run it hard sometimes i can smell gas; indication of running rich?

hahahaha, can't do the weber yet! lol, i'm getting the msd boxes first remember? then comes the weber!!!!!!!!!!! YYAAAYYYYY, the carb actually isnt leaking gas, it's just weird. i'm gonna get out there and mess with it for a long time tomorrow and see what happens though, but back to my original question: how many turns on that air/fuel screw until it's just leaned out beyond recognition?

AFAIK you can't really hurt it much at idle by leaning it out. It'll start missing badly if its too lean, but I figure you'd notice that, so keep playing with it I guess.

When I had my car idling at 750-800 RPMs with the stock carb, the mixture screw was like 3 1/2 turns out or so.

my car was having some wierd idleing and i couldnt have it under 1000, but sometimes it would drop bellow that at the lights and im like WTF?

so today i put my foot under the accelerator pedal and put it up and the idle droped so i figure RETURN SPRING?
so i went to the shop, got a new spring and just put it with the old one to make it extra firm and then idle instanly droped too 500. so i screwed it back too 800ish and it now sits at 800..
long story but it might be whats happening with u?? but i really dont know...

i didnt get a replacement spring for the nikki, i just grabed one off the shelf that was about 7cm long and i made it fit. it was only $2au
the choke is all linked in there somwhere but i dont use the chock so im not sure, the choke also does have a spring it in to.

EDIT: to ur what one is that question .. its the big fat spring on the carb and its right under where the throtle cable bolts onto the carb,

yep thats my car, and yep its right hand..
so for u the clutch and brake fluid bottles wont be on that side.
if the black sleve is off, it shouldnt do anything bad and the spring may look still good, but remember its a 20 year old spring thats be pulled and strechech millions of times, its only going to develpope some sort of slack eventually..
