what temporary muffler to get?

well my exhaust blew up today... i fnaly found out what you mean by rotary's are ungodly loud.(115db in cabin) so under the worst case scenario that my muffler blew up what would be a good sounding readily available muffler i can just pop down to the shops and pick up? im thinking of magnaflow also what would the stock exhaust size be? (so if its just a pipe blowout i can cut the broken piece out and weld a new piece in. i mean it dident sound bad but it was just really loud.

If you want a readily available muffler a borla or magnaflow is best. Unless your pipe was almost rusted out already, I doubt it was just a pipe blowout. mufflers tend to take a real beating on these cars. The one on my 79 (was original from 79 lol)had the inlet side flat plate deformed from previous backfires. Rust took it in the end as I found out, but after opening it up, I found that the innards had also been deformed from backfires likely.

If you still have the stock cats/thermal reactor setup (depending on year) a single magnaflow will quiet it down considerably. If not, your better off just dropping the money right away and putting a couple magnaflows in (one as a presilencer, and a rear one), or just go all out and get a RB setup. That is the only way it will be quiet enough. When I had my 82, I had a pacesetter header to two 5x8x18 magnaflow after the rear axle and the car still hit 98 db on the highway at 120 km/h. This was setup as a true dual system (no collector) and a custom fuel tank to allow mufflers on each side of the rear, similar to a 2nd gen. This was loud enough after a half hour drive to make you nearly go deaf and earplugs were mandatory on longer drives.

BTW, don't bother with generic "turbo" mufflers from Canadian tire or anything like that. They do NOT handle the rotary's thumping exhaust pulses very well. Had a couple on my 82 before the magnaflows and they didn't even last 100km before they started blowing apart at the seams. Fully welded mufflers are the only way to go.

Beg someone to borrow their car and wait for racing beat to ship you their universal muffler and presilencer

well as long as its quieter than a straight piped v8 ill be fine (redneckville here) ill be diving under the car to see what exactly the leak is so i know what i have to do.

To give you an idea how the true dual with magnaflows I mentioned on my 82 sounds, here is the vid of my best quarter mile run in the car.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6LXq...8aAUAAAAAAAKAA

I know its hard to tell truly how loud the car is from a video, but at least it will give you an idea how the magnaflows sound. BTW, this is on a stockport S4 NA 13B.

yea cool i have seen true duals without having to buy a diferent tank. you just exit both mufflers from the same side. you can stuff two magnaflows into that spot.

well crawled under the car again and mesured the inlet flange on the old muffler looks like a 2 1/4 '' muffler will do it.

I have a RB header, presilencer, and Magnaflow muffler(14813) on my 84 SE and it is still pretty damn loud! I like it though. Still not as loud as before I put the the presilencer on it it though.

I did have a generic stainless muffler before the Magnaflow and it was probably 30% louder in the cabin.

cuz i need the car by monday.

ok went and picked up a muffler a napa special straight through oval sound master or something. (wanted mangaflow but everywhere that sold them were only open weekdays.)

got the old muffler off.. will take a pic of it tomorow when i weld this new one in.

and yes i will be saving up for a whole custom racing beat system. i just needed something to quiet it down enough to be useable. the short drive out to the farm with the blown muffler was hell.

I have been thinking about using Moroso spiral flow.

http://www.jegs.com/p/Moroso/Moroso-...44819/10002/-1
Not a bad price...I can't find anyone with a rotary using one.

This is the only thing I can find is as far as non V8.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtid5PBte-Y

Sounds good on all the vids I looked at on youtube.

Install and post vid please.

SPENT-IT, the Porsche 928 actually is a V8 powered car.

Not sure about the Moroso spiral flow's construction, but its quite similar to most baffled mufflers (like a flowmaster or similar) and I would probably stay away from it. Some people like the sound of the baffled mufflers on rotary engines, but generally I think they allow too much of the raspiness and high pitched sounds the rotary makes through. This is just my personal opinion, but you very rarely see anyone use anything but a stainless steel wool packed straight through or semi straight through muffler. They generally hold up the best.

On a side note, I have heard of baffled muffler actually coming apart at the seams when used on a rotary for extended periods of time. They just don't seem to be able to handle the strong exhaust pulses the engine makes. Heat may also be a factor in this as the rotaries exhaust is very hot compared to piston engines, with the exception of a few of course.

Well great...I never knew Porsche had a V8. Im not really not into Porsches.

I says it has a continuous weld and unaffected by heat,..so I thought it would be great for rotarys and good flow. Yea I know regular turbo baffle type mufflers are not what you want on a rotary, but I would think this is not some cheap constructed muffler. It's round so it may be less likely to twist and pop a seam like a square muffler.

I may still give it a try.

its not too bad. the fuel usage warming the car up is retarded though.

AMEN to that. My edelbrock is missing the fast idle screw too, so choke won't keep it running by itself.

Be careful with the muffler. That sounds and looks the same as the generic "turbo" mufflers I mentioned I had on my 82. They hadn't totally blown out in the time I used them, but they were already bulging at the seams.
