What does an Inhibitor do?

What does an Inhibitor do?

So I noticed that little rod thingy sitting on top of the engine had the wire cut. I looked it up in the FSM and its called an "Inhibitor", What does this do? and is it important

It stops things from happening. It's probably important, I'd guess.

If your car isn't inhibited then it might streak at the homecoming game, or start dancing on the tables at the bar...

If you can find it in the '85 FSM and point out a page number, someone can probably tell you what it does. Your description right now is a little too vague.

^^^bingo. i've heard of this beast but i can't remember its location and i'm not sure, but i think its called an "inhibitor switch"

Wiring diagram A-1, it's for the tranny. Diagram F shows it tied in with the reverse switch. 85 FSM.
