Can someone tell me what/where the inhibitor switch is.

I'm getting ready to do a auto to manual swap on the car, but the wiring still confuses me. I'm sure when i find out what and where the inhibitor switch is, it'll make more sense. Someone please enlighten me.

Are you talking about the starting inhibitor switch on the clutch pedal, I would assume? It's the one located closer to the driver side, the other one is the clutch switch (firewall side). Both are needed to prevent the car from moving while the clutch is engaged while attempting to start it.

PM me, we are also doing a auto to manual swap at this time. Already got the master/slave cylinders attached, changed the differential, drive shaft and installed the engine/trany yesterday. Running it ganged twin turbo, did away with most of the vaccum lines.

Have to install the PFC and hopefully crank it either today or tomorrow, keep me posted on your project. It's a big job and many sore backs too.

the plug for the inhibitor sits on the tranny near the drivers side of the gearbox...big plug near the starter...u cant miss it....to bypass it, u bridge 2 of the connectors (top row two that are futhest apart)

bypassing this switch all together is not the correct way to do it, no offence, its not really bad, but these 2 wires should be run inside the cabin to the clutch switch when you install the clutch pedal, order doesnt matter, as all it does is give continuity or not. best of luck.

not calling you a liar, but i find that hard to believe. the clutch switch is there to prevent someone from starting the car in gear by requiring that the clutch pedal be depressed before completing the starter circuit. are you able to start the car without depressing the clutch? and also, do you have a diagram of the UK/JDM starting system? i would just like to see as i find this strange.

I appreciate you arent calling me a liar...but trust me...you can definitely crank UK and JDM cars while they are in gear. You can crank the car without depressing the clutch or start it in neutral without depressing the clutch!
Ive got enough expereinces with RX7s...see my sig!!

i know there are alot more experienced people out there, hence why i try and be respectful to my elders every single standard car ive ever been in has had that switch, and it just messed with my mind why they would leave what i consider a valuable safety feature out of the car, but i didnt design it, and im guessing it wasnt that important or they would have put it in. but i guess i can understand it, as many of my friends have bypassed these switches inorder to install remote starter systems

Thanks for all the replies. I feel a lot better now. What would be the problem with tapping the two wires together on the harness connected to the tranny?? And I didnt know that there were no inhibitor switches on JDM and UK cars, so thats also interesting.

the only problem would be that it would be possible to start the car in gear with the clutch engaged. so if by accident, yourself or someone else were to try to start the car like this it could damage, the starter, flywheel, or possibly worse. but if your confident that this could never ever ever happen then go ahead and do it.

So how could I do it the right way, where I would have to disengage the clutch?

just get a clutch switch and install it when you install your clutch pedal, and run those 2 wires to that switch, order doesnt matter because all it does it provide continuity between those wires when the clutch pedal is pressed

nver had a s8 so cant possbily comment. Pretty sure 6 and 7 dont have them.

And is it really that big a deal to just remember to not have the car in gear when you start it?

the problem comes down to habit, some people leave the car in gear when parked while others dont, my habit is based on the car not being in gear when its started so based by habit i assume the car isnt in gear now if someone else were to drive my car like when i have it inspected or worked on, they may leave the car in gear.

okay im finally hooking things up and i have a quick question. When wiring up the inhibitor switch which switch on the clutch pedal assembly does it go to? there is one closer to the firewall and one above the pedal closest to the driver.

i hope to start the car tonight, even though its raining outside

IIRC it should go to the one with the connection on the firewall side. just make sure then it is depressed there is continuity between the two connections, as long as thats true it shouldnt matter which one you hook it up to.
