what do i do when..

...i lost my key?

it was an original key to my GSL.. man i am so bummed i hope i find it soon. if i dropped it in the parking lot the storm mustve washed it away by now.

are there any places that still have original looking keys and can cut one to my iginition/door locks/glove box container?

i dont know where my spare is either.. maybe in one of the many boxes i have hidden away.

Or, you can pop out your door locks and ignition tumbler (and eventually the glove box and hatch locks) and take them to a locksmith, in a ziplock baggie, to be like-keyed; keeping your car in your your garage. We lost TWO sets of my original keys, and I had to have my doors re-keyed to match a new ingition key tumbler.

I had to do this as my toddler son loved playing with keys, and we assumed that he had lost the keys SOMEWHERE; probably while playing with them in his mini-car. It is one of those little cars that a child can sit in and the door opens on one side. He'd sit in there while watching TV in the family room.

We found a set IN THE CHRISTMAS TREE, just this year! I guess my child had decided to decorate the Christmas tree with the RX7 key ring. The set was actually in the Christmas tree stand that controls the fiber-optics color wheel. We heard a strange sound when we plugged the Tree in, and found the keys inside the tree stand. They must have fell in there TWO years ago! (I had since found a single spare that fit the hatch and original doors and ignition that I could have used to avoid all the re-keying.)

Moral of the story is: Always keep a spare tucked away. Secondly, never let your toddler play with your keys, even if it isn't your daily driver =)

All mazda dealers should have your key code on file based on your VIN. I've gotten a few done.

i want to thank all of you for all your help! maybe its becasue im weird but this key is 23 years old and getting a new key is just a new key. i love to keep everything original.. maybe im going overboard. ill still keep looking for my key and my spare and when i have given up all hope i will take it to a mazda dealer or take it to a locksmith. again thank you all and have a happy new year!

From what I understand, these cars are too old for the VIN trick, but there is a 4 digit code on one of the tumblers in the doors from which a locksmith can decode and cut a new key. This question comes up every so often and a search will reveal people who have gotten the code rather than me saying that the key code is stamped on one of the tumblers...

That way you don't have to rip apart 2 doors to find the proper tumbler.

new key

If you do not find your key The easiest lock cylinder to pull out is the one for the hatch.
Be carefull when removing the plastic retainer for the rod and use a small flat blade screwdriver to pop the wire retainer off the lock cylendar.
A locksmith shoud be able to make a key to fit for about $20.
Unless one or more of the locks has been replaced all the locks should work with the same key.

I know on the FC the code is on the passenger side door lock. remove the assembly and the lock smith can rekeyed from the 4 digit code. Not sure on sa/fbs though.

to rephrase a question, will taking out the hatch lock be enough to make a new key for the entire car? at the locksmith place will there be no questions asked? thanks for the help again.

I found that a lot of different keys can unlock the doors anyway. My series 4 key can unlock and start both of my series 2 rx7s. Not very good security so I changed over to solex locks.
