Very noobish question, hope you guys can help out..

Hey guys I've wanted an rx-7 for who knows when.. but i have a question.. Is the fd really that unreliable? I want a high performance vehicle like the rx-7 but would it be something I'd regret getting? Im learning about the rotary and looking at the forum alot.. But do you think this is a car I should buy.. I've been looking at Impreza WRX's and Volkswagen GTI's, their pricier than the rx-7 and newer.. but do you think I could somewhat have good reliability with the rx7.. because when it gets down to it.. I dont want to think "hey my engine might blow today"... It sounds ignorant but i keep thinking about how what might happen if it breaks down blah blah..

Another question.. is it better to buy an rx-7 with a rebuilt engine or one thats with an original that has lets say around 50 thousand miles..

Please I dont want to get flamed.. But I hope someone could give me some insight.. Thanks..

They are great cars when you treat them right!

Do all the reliability mods, and change the oil often as the 13b eats it up! I would get one with a blown motor and have it rebuilt by someone so you know that your motor will be strong unless you get a compression test on one you are looking at. Good luck!

Your the only one that has the answer if you should buy an Rx7 or not. You should do a search on reliability mods very important. I've never taken my 7 out and thought, Is my 7 going to blow up today. Just like anything else, if you don't take care of your 7, it will fall apart and blow up. If you buy a 7 with a rebuilt already done, ask to see the paper work on it to make sure its legit. And no matter what, if you buy a 7 with a rebuilt or not get a compression test done. And if and when you buy a 7 your first mod should be a boost gauge to make sure both turbos are boosting correctly. If you have any questions I'm sure anyone here will be more than willing to help you out bro.

Thanks

Thanks guys for your insight I was kinda scared I'd get flamed on.. hehe.. but I checked out what all the reliability mods are.. but what do you think would be the average price for all the mods.. I went to http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/reliability.html and I was wondering how much this would all be... And what should the compression be on an rx7? does it matter how many miles is on the engine or the turbos? Sorry im new to this.. But thanks again..

I got almost 130K miles on original Motor and turbos.

I eat Subra Imprezas for Breakfast...
I eat WRX for Lunch...
I eat Mustangs for mid day snack
I eat C5 Vetts for Dinner
I eat Supras for midnight snack..

Get the picture??

How dare you compare a FD3S to a Subaru Impreza
or WRX.. They aren't even in the same catagory.
Not only that SUbarus are UGLY..

Buy a FD3S, get a body kit, rims, sleek lights..
You'll have the baddest ride in your Town, city, county
or what ever.

FD3S are one of the best sport cars ever made, handling, speed and braking. Last but not least
ONE OF THEEEE prettiest cars EVER built. PERIOD.

What other 10yo car get " is that a 2002"???
Is that a Viper and so on and so on.

So you are worried about reliability and so forth..
Anything worth wild in life has a cost, whether it be
a car, house, or women. FD3s ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE.
Even MAZDA states that, Its for enthusiats. IT takes
a more care than other cars, so be it.. BUT You can
BEAT any car into the ground, even hondas, You reap
what you sow.. If you abuse your FD, it'll get you back.
If you treat her right. She'll treat you right.
Its that simple...

Or get a Honda accord V6 and not worry anything,
Like my MOM...

Goodluck

IMO, if you want reliability, get another car. If you want a pure sports car, get the FD.

What Mahjik said. If you need the car on a daily basis and don't have something for a backup, forget it, unless you don't mind public transportation. Bottom line is, you need to be prepared for the car to go down periodically for repairs and maintainance. They aren't super expensive to maintain compared to other similar sports cars, and no the engine's don't just randomly explode, however they tend to wear everything quickly, need frequent maintainance, and stuff just tends to break more than your average car (that being something like a GTI) On top of this, good rotary shops often take time, its not like you can drop it off at the local dealer, get the rental car, and pick it up the next day. However, with this said, I have a feeling the WRX isn't going to be the most reliable car in the world either, its built with a similar philosophy and I see it as somewhat of the FD for the 2000s, only ugly . Alas, your taste seems to have doomed you!
