Water Pump Pulley rips pff!!!!

Well, on the way home the NYRA meet my idiot cluster comes on, I think its just the alternator belt because it was rubbing and just continue to drive. I keep a close look at all the gauges and everything looks great. I get home to find the carnage. The pulley ripped completly off of the pump. So I drove 20 minutes without it!!!!!!! The temp never got over 180 degress, good thing it was 35 today.
Here are the pics of the pulley, they are graphic so be warned.

Eveything else was still mounted to the water pump!

Looks like it rubbed against the pump housing as it came off!

Funny, something that takes alot of stress is such thin metal!

Nice job, be sure to check your water pump, it may have caused the problem or it may have been damaged.

The pump turns easy and does not have any play at all. I replaced last year when the bearings went.

Good job john, guess that GM alternator was too much for it eh? I may have a spare pulley if you need one...

Your motor probably saw much higher temps than you are thinking it did. Without the water circulating, it was not passing over the temp sensor. Hopefully everything is okay though. Good luck man, that really sucks...

Same thing happend to me a while back but i caught it before it broke completely off...i replaced the pully and she was fine. I wonder what causes this problem? Old age of the pully? Tension?

I'm picking up the new pulley today, so I will be able to test the water pump then to see if the bearings are ok and the such. If not, no big deal to replace it.

I've seen that once before and the conclusion that we came to at the time was that there was slight water pump shaft runout combined with too much belt tension on the only belt that was running on the pulley causing metal fatigue as there was a continuous flexing of the pulley as it turned.

Ok, I ordered a new water pump just to be sure on this. I also ordered two new belts so they will not be as tight. (25-7380) since I'm running a double pulley on my alternater. My old belt belts where a yahoo and a 25-7375, it was a bitch getting them on so mybe that was the resaon (very tight). Thanks guys

You should be good to go after you do that. You might want to check the two new belt lengths against each other before you leave the parts store. Sometimes, due to manufacturing tolerances, one belt is a little longer than the other even though they have the same part number. When they are running side by side on the dual pullies, one of them will never get tight enough.

I'll beleive that. Add in the fact that John has an E-fan, and probably didn't have the original fan clutch adapter on the front of the pulley, and I'd bet we have a winner.
The fan clutch adapter actually helps to re-inforce the pulley, by spreading the load, rather than just relying on the (rather) small bolt heads.

The very reason I don't like the idea of the yoohoo belt.

Rogue, never thought of that. I might consider putting it back on now! Maybe cut a metal plate and use it to help distrbute the load!

Thanks guys

That sucks John, but you know what that means, more time for the car!

Hope everything works out well. BTW don't try taking the car past 8k RPM's or you'll break more than the waterpump.

j/k
