Wait, my fan ISN'T supposed to run all the time?

Another thread caught my attention and got me thinking. My fan never stops running. It follows the rpm of the engine and I sound like a garbage truck every time I run up through the gears. It is so loud. It can be heard at cruising speeds as well. Depending on rpm, it creates anything from a gentle breeze to category 5 hurricane winds, no matter how warm or cool the engine is. With everything cool, I can get about half a rotation on the fan when giving it a flick. I can fully rotate it by hand and it feels like I'm pushing it through thin peanut butter. Am I correct in thinking that this is not normal fan behavior?

No that's not normal, it sounds like the fluid coupling isn't working anymore.

When working correctly the fan should engage for 10-20 seconds when a cold engine is first started.

Then it will shift into free wheel mode and only reengage when the engine gets hot, under heavy load or sitting in traffic.

If properly free wheeling the fan will spin easily with the engine off.

And with the engine running but not hot you should be able to stop the fan blades with a whisk broom.

You should get this fixed, if the the engine isn't warming up fully it will rob you of power and gas mileage.

Here's what a properly functioning fan clutch should look like in free spool mode.

Suggestion: Use a whisk broom to test your fan clutch, not you hand.

Definitely don't use your hand, cause if it's locked up, it's a food processor.

Excellent video though!

Well, I definitely failed the broom test, and now my broom has a few less bristles. But at least I have all my fingers. I'm going to go electric. I hit the scrap yard yesterday and found a Villager fan. It was a bit more trimming than i was lead to believe, but it's all mounted up nice and secure using the stock bolts with some steel strapping for extra support. Now on to installing the switch and relay.
