Vacuum leak

1983 Rx7 GSL, 12a

Do you think this would cause enough of a vacuum leak to not idle and the header glow red. Also the carb spacer is broken but I don't think it was the reason. I have another one from a guy on here on the way.


Sad part is, I've sprayed it with carb cleaner everytime and it never made a difference.

I just realized that I had put the gaskets that came in with the carb kit, ontop of the permanent gaskets.

I thought they were just part of the spacer.... not the gaskets...

sighhh will update when I put on the gaskets right, annnd block up the vacuum leak.

We will see.

Not sure if this is relevant, but I actually used a hockey-tape kind of tape for that hose connected to the exhaust because I accidentally ripped it once since the rubber was so old and brittle. Made it feel more solid and felt safer to the touch so I put it back in.

I have an issue where my secondaries won't open right now and that's scaring me - but I'd rather have that then see a header glowing! It wouldn't be because it was running too rich or lean would it? I always thought that was the main issue with overheating exhaust.

Definitely running lean. I think I flood it out and theres not even gas on the plug. The vacuum leak is so bad that I can't even create a no atmosphere condition to even pull the fuel down . On the secondaries there should be a --| looking latch actually latched onto the bracket. Sometimes that bracket will advance so far that the spring will pop it out of place.

Retarded timing will also make the header glow big time.

Thats what I needed to know, because I tried to retard the timing some to get it to run with the vacuum leak.

The whole exhaust was red within a few minutes of running so I shut it down and pulled the carb.

Going to do a fresh start, pull distributor, patch vacuum leak, actually apply the gasket right this time and see how it goes.

usually when i'm happy and think it may be the problem, its not.

When I'm angry and frustrated and feel dumb for not seeing the one obvious thing, it usually is.

So I have a feeling those will be the problems -__-

I tell you what though, the engine has been sitting for atleast 9 years before I got it...

If theres any carbon left its definitely gone, I just hope I did'nt mess up the seals doing this
