Turbo question...why use FC turbos?

Why do so many people who turbo FB's seek out the later S4/S5 turbochargers? Everything I've learned about them leads them to being a bit more complicated and slightly less reliable than larger, more capable, similarly priced turbos, like a T3, for example. They're also not that easy to come by in really good usable condition. I'm just curious as to why they seem to be the turbo of choice.

You have a nice cheap setup w/ those turbos. You can buy the turbo, exhaust manifold (will fit 12a w/ little modification), and it comes w/ an internal wastegate for around 200 bucks (or less).

A turbo and manifold is far from a setup. It is a good start but far from a setup. You will still need a fuel pump and regulator, a carb hat that will stay on and together under pressure, piping, oil lines, a good carb or FI system setup for boost, distributor work, and so on. An intercooler is also a plus. Your talking 1k plus for a finished project.

TII turbos are a cheap good start. Most turbo swaps are started with a Jspec so it is that much simpler. The stock manifold is limited by its internal wastegate. Even when ported, the wastegate and manifold are limited to what a TII turbo can produce. Note the S5 turbos flow a little more and are considered a upgrade when compared to the S4.
