so the only REAL advantage to the SE is that it already has the 13b and the larger choice of wheels?

Don't forget better brakes and a radiator-type oil cooler. Some of them had power steering which is nice as well, if only for the improved ratio. Plus it has an EFI fuel pump and a baffled fuel tank.

SE has larger brakes, vented rear brakes, better bolt pattern, a 13B
GSL is lighter and more plentiful, thus cheaper to get. limited wheel selection.

I'm a die hard SE fan, they are just the cream of the crop, but my next project is not and SE...
but only cause I found a body in mint shape, But I've got an SE's to swap all the parts from
So it will be an SE when done, just not from the factory....

se model all have p/s and speed sensitive steering built in, they have better neutral steer than other models. The gearing is better for acceleration 4:10 versus 3:90.. You can slways put manual windows in them, Taller overdrive in the trans. The 85 model actually gets better mileage than the 84, why ihave not figured out yet. You get 30 more hp from the start
and with only a header/rb system and kn filter you get about 165hp. You can modify the computer system for more hp and economy. BAd points, the idle control system is sometimes a nightmare. The injection system will test your diagnostic abilities to the max.
It's a matter of what you are looking for, i waited two years to find the right se after buying and selling at least 25 carb models. rx7doctor

Glad to hear you are happy with your car. But there is nothing wrong with the other models. The brakes are only marginally different. If you upgrade the brakes anyway, it is a moot point. The bolt pattern is different, but not any "better" since they are both 4-bolt patterns. If anything, the non-SE bolt pattern would have more wheels available since there were more of those sold. If you don't like the pattern, upgrade axles to a 5-bolt. Most wheel manufacturers will make wheels for any bolt pattern you specify.

It is very subjective to say the gearing is "better." Gearing in any model may or may not be the best for your application and your wheel/tyre combinations. The remote oil cooler came on other models as well and is easy to retro-fit. The other item such as fuel pump are normal upgrade as well.

They are all very capable cars, but once you begin to restore and upgrade components, the differences are not as significant.

Ehhhh, the 12a cars could have "more wheels available" if you count the million or so "plus" wheels that were made...but the SE pattern has about 50 times more aftermarket varities for it.

Not to mention the SE all have the misfortune of being 84/85 cars, which means they have that ugly, old lady interior design.

Hey, go ahead and knock the '84-85 interior, but how many cracked 84-85 dashboards have you seen? It's a hell of a lot more durable than the 79-83 or the 86-88 interiors.

the 84/85's have a much better dash air flow system and can get the nice indiglo gauges
as for the only marginally better brakes, Uh. yah, you need a brake check.
and SE bolt pattern is "better" try finding wheels in the no SE, see how many posts there are.
But this is all just personal pref. a bone stock car no mods, SE for me.
A built up car can be any model, SA, FB, its all good.

Each mod RB did to a GSL-SE added 21HP. You start with 135. Then add their exhaust with the 5/6 port pressure bung in the presilencer. You're now at 156HP. Then change over to a dellorto and advance the timing slightly. Now you're at 177. This is paraphrased right out of the '71-'85 RB catalogue. I may have forgotten a few little things like their custom foam air filter etc, but that's the gist of it.

I'd personally get Mazdatrix' GSL-SE specific exhaust sytem because it had the 5/6 port pressure bung located in the header to help open the ports a little sooner. I'd also obviously install DLIDFIS and run FC leading plugs. Trailing would either keep the stock BR9EQ-14s, or maybe swap in some BR8EQ-14s.

I think the GSL-SE exhaust system has the pressure bung on the center section, at least on the streetport version.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do about the six-ports for my S4 FI 13b swap. If I decide to throw down the cash for a Haltech I may get an entire S5 intake and let the air pump do it. Or I could just try to add a backpressure tube to the header. I e-mailed RB about theirs to see how easy it would be to have one added but naturally they haven't replied. I already have a "streetport" 13b header... just no o2 bung or backpressure tube.

SE's had only three available factory options-leather, glass sunroof and power steering.

The pressure bung is located on the very front of the header.

I know this is a long shot, but if someone has one of these headers with the bung on it, if you could take some good pictures of both sides, I'd appreciate it. I'm trying to decide on the feasability of adding one to my header.

I wanna see some more wheels for the SE..

I know I've been able to find sources for more than two wheels for the NON-SE...
