Transmission options for performance

I recently test drove the Miata turbo and found it a great machine. Apart from the excellent performance and handling, whst really impressed me was thw close ratio gears and the ease for rapid changing. It really made the gen 1 tranny seem out of the dark ages.

What arethe options for updating the gears. We are happy to drop in a 13bt or 20b so why not upgrade the tranny/drive to bring a 20 year old package up to date.

I have seen reference to transplanting a Supre or early Miata set, but what is the best way of going?

I am thinking of swapping one when I go with forced induction this winter.

does anyone know how much a 12a tranny can handle.

you can break a 12A tranny with a stock 12A! it depends on the clutch characteristics and how much traction you have. of course, send enough torque through it and you WILL eat the trany now matter how gentle the clutch/tires are...

Yep, turbo II tanny is the easiest way to go. AFAIK you just need to mod the tranny mount or fab a new one and shorten the whole deal. Then you'll need a custom driveshaft.

Although, my 12A tranny is still holding up (a bit noisily) with a 13BT behind it, and some occassional rough abuse. Just no clutch dropping antics.

later year t2 trans is the way to go, if i had any other expendable cash i would go get a dog gear box. now that is modern day technology and you dont even have to use your clutch when shifting muhahah

dog gears aren't modern ! I think they had thos before syncro's ... The ultimate would be a sequential box ... pull back to go up and push forwards to go down

About $150.

Revolution Rotary - Parts for Sale

- Make sure they send it in a crate. Mine got screwed up by UPS using the shifter as a handle.

The 89+ ones are a bitch to install on an FB becuase of their different mounting charecteristics. Although Internally, they are virtually identical.

Go for an 88

How would you like to have a transmission with the same gears as the old school Mazda Competition close ratio 5-speed, 30% stronger than a miata trans, and lighterweight? Oh, and it will fit in your 1st gen trans case.

Yes, yes and yes. Is there such a beast floating around, or are you just toying with us?

quaife sell RWD 6 speed sequential boxes for about $10'000 ... you need a new prop and a bellhousing adapter etc. so I reckon about $12'000 should do it

hardly a years wages ... more like half
