Tranny help. TII Converted

Sup guys. I did a little searching and couldn't find my exact situation so I thought I should post it here to see if I got any replies or answers.

A couple years ago I converted my automatic 12a 82 gs. to a manual 13b. The tranny is off an 86 gtu (TII) along with the engine (N/A Holley carb.). My father and uncle did all the work and later swapped out that TII tranny for an identical one (same year same model) because of throw-out bearing troubles. The kept the 12a automatic driveshaft somehow and kept the 13bt tranny in tact and everything seemed right.

So today I'm on my way to the meet and all of a sudden the car shuts off. Oil pressure is good,Temp is good, electricity if good so that leads me to think everything is fine. The car started up fine after I pulled over and checked everything. Right when I'm pulling off the highway is clear and I go WOT the engine is still reving(great too if I might add), but I'm not moving any faster. This is progressive in every gear at around 5-6k RPM.

After the meet I'm on my way home and I downshift to pass on the left, and the car does the same thing after going from 3k to 6-7k in 4th gear (downshifted from 5th). In 5th gear the car has ALWAYS been very very violent and it's like riding a giant vibrator, the vibrating just doesn't stop.

So my question is, what can be done to imporve the ride quality?

I was thinking of getting another 13bt tranny(this one is squeeling rather loadly) hooking up a 13b manual trans tail from an se. and getting the drive shaft as well.

Any suggestions? Am I going the right way with this?

Hate to break the news, but there is no 86 TII or GTU. I soundslike you have a stock S4 NA tranny. As far as the engine reving and the car not accelerating, sounds like the clutch is slipping, and why would anyone replace a tranny beacause the TO bearing is shot, It is a component, but not a part of the transmission itself.

The vibration can come from several factors. Driveshaft out of balance, u-joints shot, tranny mounts shot, input shaft bearing worn. That should get you started.

If you would, post a pic of the tranny.

I'm 100% sure the tranny that's on there right now is off a TII. I was the one who took it off the j-spec engine when my uncle had it shipped in.

I guessed it was an 86. I'll try to get it up on stands tomorrow and get some pics. If not then monday will be a definite.

Would the clutch slip cause it's worn? Do I need a new one? Would some lucas trans. additive help that out?

Any ideas on the squeeling?

If it's a J-spec, then it probably is a TII, we didn't get them until 87. If the bottom of the tranny is flat and has cross ribs, it's a TII. They also have 2 drain or fill plugs, I don't remember which. NA's have one of each.

Clutch's slip when they are overheated and glazed, the disc gets too thin or the fingers on the pp get weak. You won't know for sure until it's torn down.

The TII trannys also have a problem with the pivot ball wearing and clutch forks beanding/breaking due to the heavier pp they use, especially aftermarket pp's.

Squealing, check the throw out bearing and pilot bearing. If that's not it try the input shaft bearing.

If the engine speed goes up without the car going any faster, the clutch is slipping.

If the engine shuts off under power, then you might be running out of fuel, or the ignition system is weak, or maybe there's an electrical problem like a poor connection/broken wire that goes open-circuit when the engine torques over.

If there's a horrible vibration in 5th gear and only 5th gear (no vibration in 4th *at the same MPH*) then the transmission needs rebuilt.

Transmission fluid additives will do nothing to address any of these issues.

Ok so I know i need a rebuild now. Thanks for the help

I know the tranny has a rib pattern on the bottom where the fluid drain plug is. I never looked at the tranny too hard to notice another fill plug other than the one on the driver side near the middle of the side of the tranny.

Can I do a rebuild myself? Or should I take it to get rebuilt?

Thanks for the advice guys.

Check the second gen section for an 87+ FSM to download, the proceedure is in there. You can also dl the 85 FSM in the stickies here if you want to get and idea of what's involved. In general, the NA and TI trannys are similiar, but you will need the TII one if you do it yourself.
