Is this too much rust? (some big pics)

Hey all, I'm starting to experience that common nightmare of rust. Tore up my carpet earlier this week and found some flakes of metal, and sure enough, there was a small hole forming in the driver's floorpan. I've chiseled away as much metal as I could, don't have a wirebrush on me but my neighbor is going to lend me his next week. I'm just wondering if you think this is fixable by welding in a new plate? My biggest concern is that one rust hole goes over the frame rail and fuel/brake line (not sure which). Oh, and to kinda keep you from freaking out too much, the metal that's left in the pictures is rigid enough to step on, and rigid enough to weld too I think.

I'm not really familiar with the areas on the frame that are load-bearing, how critical is this area? Oh, and there isn't any other rust around the car that I can find after tearing up the carpet and such, except for an area in the front under where the battery sits. The battery area rust is not too bad, its poked a hole through the frame, but I'm 99% certain i can repair it with some sheet metal.

Please tell me how deep a hole I'm in!

Thanks in advance.

Rust is the devil, kill it before it kills your car. It looks like the rust on your car is pretty extensive, if you have the tools and patience to do it, it would be pretty cheap. But to get it professionally done is going to be $$$.

Hey, there's a hole in the floor.

I'd go for it, if it doesn't work then you're right back where you started.

The problem isn't rust that you can see, it's what you can't see.

Rule of thumb, any rust holes are surrounded by 5x the area of bad metal.

Not saying it can't be saved, but it will take a LOT of time and effort. Floor patch panels are nonexistent.

If there is little or no bin or wheelwell rust, it might be worth fixing. Cutting the floor out of another isn't a bad idea at all. If you do that, take the entire floor, including the rockers, just in case.

Its fixable, like everyone said if you have the patience and time to do it right then you'll be ok. Both my FB's had extensive rust, especially in the wheel wells and all the other common spots. Took the time to fix it and so far so good. good luck

Cut out the bad and patch it. Coat the rest and dont worry. Should last a few more years that way.

Geez, you guys must all live in the south where the cars don't rot. That's nothing. My $500 beater GS had worse rocker panel and floor rot. It took me a weekend of work, but there's all new metal in it.

My nova had about 10 times the rust. New floor pans, quarter panels, a new fender, a new door.... yep, rust is a bitch.

There's no such thing as too much rust. My neighbor Bobby just brought home a rusty, pretty, but long retired 1965 Mustang, straight six automatic, everything original is there. Right down to the Devo hubcaps and the carb (pre emissions, but it does have seat belts). Plus a lot of rust. But the rust you can fix, a restored original 1965 Mustang? Priceless.

And a nicely running restored 84-85 GSL?

Here's my opinion:

Priceless, minus a few thousand.

Thanks all for the input, I'm getting kinda anxious to go at the rust

Already ordered new weatherstripping for the doors, which I think was one of the contributing factors. The previous weatherstripping was missing a corner

Went with the 1AAuto replacement, has anyone else gone with them before? They seemed to have the best deal and their site seemed pretty professional.
