Tire issue

I've got a stock 1980 RX-7 with aluminum 13" wheels.

It's almost impossible to find 13" tires now, especially with a decent speed rating.

I've found new ones from a used tire dealer that were old overstock items. But he let me know they are older tires, and although the rubber looks good, they might have age issues.

Where can I get decent rubber for my car? I want 195/70R13 or 205/70R13.

If not, then I guess I should buy new rims which is another expense I didn't budget for.

Wachatink?

Thanks.

not sure about missouri, but in canada i never had problems finding tires for my 13" Try your most general store, here it's called Canadian Tire, it's your general home hardware store that sells everything for home and auto.

Sumitomo HTRs are dirt cheap and perform well. I run a width of 215 on my 85 with stock wheels (and had stock springs at the time) without any clearance issues. They run about 50 bucks each....

get 205/60r13 or 185/70r13 in an H rating and you'll be happy. The sumitomo 206r6013 are doing well for everyone

Depends on what your looking for and how much they cost. The sumis are a good deal for a decent tire but its not a performance tire by any means and its a blackwall. For preformance you can still get Toyos but they run about 150 a piece.

Now if your looking for that RWL look theonly option you have besides old stock is the Cooper Cobra like I have here. They are definitely not preformance tires but they give you that old school look.

These 'older' tires should have some sort of a mfg date code molded in. If the tire dealer can't/won't decode it, walk away.

I checked TireRack and others on line and could not find a 195/70R13, or a 205/60R13 anywhere.

I did find a place in Colorado who could get Coopers, but without purchasing online, the only thing I was able to find in my area was through a used tire dealer. He had brand new stickers that were never mounted, but are discontinued tires that he bought from another comapany. They were 10 years old, with an "S" rating up to 112 MPH.

I considered the 205/60r13, but when I did the RPM vs. Speed calculations, I found that it would cost me more RPM and my speed would be about 5 mph less than what the speedo shows at 80-110 mph. Plus the tires he had, still didn't have high performance ratings.

He's still got enough 13" tires to take care of me for a while, but as time progresses, the less I want to trust their age.

Several tire specialists that I spoke with said even the 14" tires are getting hard to find, and recommended going to 15' rims if I want to keep finding tires.

Should I plan to go to low profile 15" tires & rims? If so, where can I get 15" rims with a 4x110 bolt pattern?

Thanks.
