Tiny Little Coolant Pool. WTF?

Ok so I noticed a little pool of coolant in one of the little divits on the top of the block under where all of the vac ports are on the carb plate.....

I wish i could get a pic but its kinda blocked.

The best way to describe it is like the "Typical Dowel Pin Leak" but on the carb side of the block and its coolant instead of oil....

Anyone have any thoughts??????

O-rings between the intake and engine harden and leak, just like the dowel pin ones do, only coolant there. Eliminate all other possible sources first, then remove intake.

So unlike the "dowel pins" the "o rings" can be replaced without a rebuild?????

Please say yes

There is a heater hose that runs right above the block that goes to the heater core. Check that hose before you pull the intake. yes those intake o rings can be relaced without a rebuild.

Yes, the intake O rings can be replaced without removing the engine and without a rebuild. you have to remove the carb. and the intake manifold, pop in a couple of O rings and a new gasket (Advance Auto has them for not too much) and you are good to go.

The Coolant O-rings are only a couple of bucks OEM from your local Mazda dealership. Remember to replace your intake manifold gasket as well if you are taking off the intake manifold.

Do i have to drain the system (coolant)

Do i have to worry about any coolant getting into the ports????

While the intake is out are there any mods that should be done to it????

Does the carb come off first or both as one unit?

Why is the sky blue?

If two trains left the Washington D.C. at the same time both going the same speed, Train one has 25 cars filled with coal nined from Mississippi, the other train has 60 cars filled with feathers from chickens raised in Montana. Train one is Detroit Diesel powered and the other is Electric. Train one makes stops in Georgia, South Carolina, and Virginia. The other train makes stops in New Jersey, New York, and Vermont. The Driver of train one is from Wyoming and the driver of the other train is from Arkansas............ Where did the trains leave from???????

Sorry i was board.

No to all. But be prepared to spill some coolant.

You can take the carb and manifold off togeather. But it might be easier to get at things if you take the carb off first (it's been a while sence I've been around a Nikki)

That sounds like coolant is getting into your bell housing. Arent there freeze plugs behing the flywheel?

Magic Pills

The smartest Mazda mechanic I know told me about this little trick. He uses it religiously on every engine he does, and whenever he replaces the coolant. I have been using it for several years myself.

Go the your friendly Chevy dealer and buy a package of the "G.M. coolant system supplement" pills. When you fill the radiator, crush two or three of these pills and insert them, then warm up the engine. It is a vegetable material, it absolutely will not clog up your radiator or cause any other problem, but it goes away when you drain the coolant, and you have to do it again each time you change the antifreeze. I cannot explain how it works, but it is effective if you are dealing with a very small leak.

I assume you know that you must not go more than two years max without changing your coolant on a rotary because of the rotor housing corrosion problems.
