Talking a thorough cleaning

I have an '83 with stock everything (12A carb with "rats nest") plus K&N air filter and cold air ram. It lacks tire chirping into fourth that it once had when I bought it 4 years ago. It seems "constipated" and hesitant. I just put new plugs, new wires, distributor cap and rotor and they smoothed things out. I'll clean the air filter and replace the fuel filter. What I was wondering was:
What should I set my timing at? Should I take off the vaccum advance? Should I take away the "rats nest?" Does the "rats nest" truely include any and all vacuum hoses? Are any hoses needing to be re-routed rather than terminated? And how do I remove the cat converters and hollow them out?

if you can afford it, go to a muffler shop and get them to put in a straight pipe where your cats are, or buy a straightpipe from racing beat and bolt it in. $10 says your cats are causing the "constipated" feeling.

On a side note... you could chirp your tires going into 4th? Crazy... I can barely sneek out a chirp in 3rd, and my engine doesn't have many kilometers on it...

Tire chirping has a lot to do with clutch and very little to do with power. Shitty tires are a major contributor as well. I can't chirp into 4th on a regular shift, but I bet I can waste that stock carbed 12A *** lol.

Silver's right, tire chirping doesn't meen *****. I've got a 12A extend port and IDA Weber that's obviously putting down a lot more power than stock. With a "mild" clutch and sticky tires I can barely chirp into 3rd gear.

How loud is the car if you put a straight pipe where the cats are and you have headers? Will this see much of a HP gain?

How do you guys get the tires to chirp when you shift from first to second? I can't seem to get it right.

I've got a new problem. While cruising today, I noticed an intermitant sound coming from the engine. It's coming from the hose that enters the left (driver's side)
side of the air filter housing. When it makes the noise, it blows air into the housing rather than suction. I can't identify it using my Haynes manual. Does anybody know what this could be? Also, I've noticed that the car backfires the odd time. Just a quiet, mild pop.

As far as making the tires chirp, all I do is slam the gas down - go to redline - release the gas and slam the clutch down, change gears - release the clutch and slam the gas down. Kinda like marching while sitting on your assets. Lots of fun!

Should be able to quite easily... even easier if you have a short shifter. Like the dude above me said, just slam it. Practice your speed shifting, and get it so you can change gears in less than 1 second... by then you'll be chirping. Your feet will be doing a nice little march, and if you have a passenger who's not used to it, they'll be whacking their head on the dash, then the headrest, then the dash, then the headrest... etc

When you say consideriably louder, do you mean unbearable, would this sort of set up be legal? I am a student so have no cash and wouldn't mind doing a new exaust and having a straight pipe in the midle would be a cheaper mod. I have headers but they are pretty bad ones.

well, when i first put my 7 on the road...i had rb headers straight through to a hi flow muffler.....

the cop when he pulled me over said he heard me a about a mile away......its ok at idle..but when you start getting near redline..read cop magnet....

a day later, i got a resonator put in...and shes fine now.....

So for the tire chirping, it's best to do it from 1st to 2nd?
