stupid question about the 84' models

i have read a few different places that the 84 GSL's had rear disc, and some places saying that only the GSL-SE's had rear disc? what is the correct answer here, on the thread in the archives it looks as if disc was on the GSL also. a lot of people have told me differently though

my car has no badge on the back, but has a roof, alloy 4 spokes, power mirrors, rear drums. I'm confused on if mine is a GS or a GSL now, i'm sure one of you guys knows the answer to this for sure. Not that it really matters in the long run

Sounds like a GS. All GSL and GSL-SE models came with rear discs

the models are pretty simple, i think the confusion comes from there being some slight variation over the model years, ie some years the sunroof is standard in a GS and some years it is optional.

the second source of confusion is the idea that there were either special order options or the factory built oddballs, which is false, Mazda is not GM, and there are some options, but there aren't any mistakes.

so in 1984 a GS is rear drums, alloy wheels, power mirrors, all the interior lights (map, key, trunk), cruise control. i think the sunroof is optional, and most have it (off the top, sunroof is standard for a GS in 83, but in 84-85 its an option again), and the tape deck

the GSL is a GS, but it has a sunroof for sure, rear discs, rear wiper, limited slip diff, power windows, ac and the ETR tape deck/eq. leather and power steering are the only options.

an S is manual mirrors, and sunroof is not allowed.

perfect, that explains it, for sure mine is a GS.

i'm going to have to look for the light in the trunk, i know my parts car has it, but i'm not sure about my good one, as far as cruise control, i'm not sure either of my cars have that, but then again i probably could have missed that one

Alright, here's some more information which makes -SE identification that much easier:

GSL - Limited Slip Differential, and the rear disks are SOLID. 4x110 'standard' wheel spacing and 13" diameter "+" wheel design.

SE - LSD and the rear disks are VENTED and larger than the front rotors by about 1/2". 4x114.3 and 14" wheels, typically the 'electric razor' stock wheels.

So, if you see a rear disk brake car look closely to see if they're vented rotors and then look at wheel size, if stock. HTH,

If its got drum brakes then is not a GSL. a sun roof makes it a GS. also easy way to tell is by the diff. if its an lsd, you have a gsl (or SE, but youd know if you have an se)

Edit: My 83 gsl has a sun roof, lsd, disc brakes, and leather seats. my 84 gsl has the same minus leather seats (I hate leather)
An 81 parts car I bought was drums, basic interior, solid roof.

Go to this site and look at the actual dealer brochures.
At the end of each brochure, it has a listing of what options were standard and what are optional by model. Then it takes the guesswork out of things. Hope that helps.

Just as an aside for all of us with power steering SE's and GSL's, - it's not listed in the list of options in the brochures (for either 84-5) but is mentioned under the steering specs/turn radius etc.... Wierd.

Of course for SAs none of this really applies the same. I think whats been said applies to all the
FBs.

My SA is a GS, has no sunroof, drum brakes, power antenna, rear defrost, special trim on the
interior etc etc.

Good advice to look at the original brochures.
