I have a racingbeat header on my 12A. It is a straight shot from the header to the stock muffler, correct? I was thinking I could just get some nice thick 2" pipe and run it straight to the stock muffler from the header. I read somewhere that the stock muffler flows fairly well. I guess my main concern is how loud it would be. With just the RB header and stock cat, I am making way more power than before and the sound is fairly quiet, even on the highway. I guess the real question is how much more power will the straightpipe to stock muffle yield, and how much louder will it be? I know I could always get a presilencer, but they are $130 and I'm on a very tight budget. Any cheapo alternative to a presilencer that wont die under rotary exhaust?

 

Any exhaust shop can make a strait pipe. It will be louder than the pre-silencer, and much louder than the cat. And don't expect the quality to be that great. Thin wall tubing and flanges.

 

I'm talking about good thick wall piping, maybe from racingbeat, or some stainless steel piping. And i have access to a mig welder. Has anyone here run headers to a straightpipe to the stock muffler or something similar to that setup? My main concern is that it can be bearable on the haighway. I do a lot of highway driving.

 

The stock muffler relies on the exhaust manifold and converter(s) to act as presilencers. It will be quite a bit louder without them.

The only cheap alternative to a presilencer that I could find is buying a bullet-type (straight through) glasspack, cutting it open, replacing all of the fiberglass with stainless steel wool, and welding it back up. I'm going to try it later. (I have access to a welder and the necessary metal-eating tools, so it'll basically only cost me the price of the mufflers and the steel wool.

 

What is you definition of bearable? I personally think that the short primary system is a little too loud!! Any strait pipe will be even louder. But as far as first hand experience on the set up, I think you are describing, I have none. Sorry, I cann't be of any help.

 

Hey peejay, let me know how your jimi-rigged pre-silencer turns out. I'd like to try that. It sounds cheap and effective.
Has anyone tried a turbo muffler? Will they last or even muffle any?

 

i bought a rb straight pipe for 85rs, but that is for the stock header. I dont think it will fit, but if you want it i well sell it for $50. I paid over $100, and had it on for a week but it was way too loud

i ran an rb header to a $130.00 dtm style straight through muffler,
it sounds pretty damn nice if you ask me,
oh yea i also have a small rb presilencer after the header,
your muffler will be alot quiter then mine so im guessing the exhaust systems would be about equal,
i drive on the e-way and have no problems with the setup.

 

Personally I don't think it will be too loud for highway driving. I never have trouble with my header to a glasspak then the stock replacement muffler. As long as it exits out the rear, sound is considerably quiet at crusing speed. ITs not loud in the cabin, and when you have the radio on, you can't even hear the exhuast unless you have it at very low volume. Its no louder then any rusty truck with rusty exhuast, its only annoying to others in town primarily. But it also lets them know your coming! ..think of it as a safety feature in a way.

a glasspak huh, i hear rotary exhaust kills the fiberglass within minutes. did you repack it or something?

 

i have been thinking about going to straight pipes also. right now i have a full racing beat exhaust, and i am concerned with how low the presilencers hang. so i was thinking about ripping them out and making straight pipes to go from the long primary hearder back to the power pulse hi flow muffler.

if you do try it, let me know how the noise level comes out.
