The only thing I would think you would need to check is the depth, but I bet they would fit in fine. You would just need to cut a space and slide them in (and, of course, secure it in).

This is probably dumb, and I'm not trying to insult anyone's intelligence, but since the non-bin cars are rare in number -- you did know that you can lift that entire panel up where the bins would be, I assume...??

when i got the body, it had no panel..
the only thing that i am woundering about is the two metal slanted pieces that are welded to the frame. i have not tried to take up the boxes in my 80 yet, so i donot know if they are there too.
if not, then to put the storage bins in, i would imagine that those would have to be removed... concern, are they there for structural reasons?

I'm not sure what you are reffering to ... I'll take a pic of my storage area tonight and post it, then maybe you can show us what you mean with regard to the slanted metal pieces...

Okay...after taking another look at my storage area, I think I see what you are talking about. I have no idea if the storage bins would clear those or not..

For those that aren't familiar w/the 79 hidden storage area, here are a couple of pics...

Those beams def arent presentin my 85 which has storage beens... i dont think it would be possible to put storage beens there cause that beam would be in the dead center of them taking up like 80% of the space in the been...

I've done this. Easiest way to retrofit the bins into a '79 is to pull the sheetmetal and bins from a '81 or later car. 1984-85 had locking bins so are better. Just a few screws hold them in place and they line up perfectly with the screw holes in the '79.

The main problem is that the '79 has two additional braces that were put there for additional protection in the event of being rear ended. So, you'll have to cut away a square section from the inside top of the plastic bin to make fit. I took to my local auto upholstery shop and had the bins interior carpets modified to fit around the beams.

I'm told that alternatively you can simple take a sledge hammer and knock the beams out. Thus dropping them in without modification.

One problem is that all the bins tops were designed to a plastic hinge. Ever notice what happens when you take a piece of plastic and bend it back and forth a few times. It eventually snaps in two. Same thing here.

However, a couple of small gate hinges from your local hardware store and careful lining up of holes into the sheet metal to mount them is a common and proven successful fix.

thanks everyone for your help. those were the beams that i was talking about, and too the problems that i kinda figured would be there if i got rid of them.

acuspeed, did that box come with your seven, or did you custom make that for the purpose of adding a hidden area??

something like that might even do it for me.. just need a place for a couple subs, and my amp and cd changer.

The car was like that when I bought it. I am the third owner, and I do know that the second owner added several things to the interior to make it more like the GS model (mine is and S), but as far as I know, that was limited to adding things like the dead pedal, the rearview mirror w/night vision and little things like that.

To the best of my knowledge, all the 79's came with that hinged panel to cover the storage area ... but I'm not 100% certain about that.

okay.. i think i may just try to build something , at some point, to fit back there. the bins would be nice, but it is a lot of room to lose in them.

Actually, the loss of space because of the impact beams isn't as much as you would think. Again, I did this retrofit to my '79 and was pretty happy with the results.

Also, with a bit of modification, the cavity of the storage bins are an excellent place to install a CD changer. But, with that in mind, I would suggest you get the storage bin set up out of a '84-85 so you get the locking feature.

hozzmanrx7: the bins in my 80 are were i currently store my cd changer and amp.. i figured that for now, rather than looking around from some bins from a 84-85, that i would just use what i have.

could you send me a couple pics of your bins, so i can take a look at what you did. also, what did you use to mark the bins, so that you knew exactly were to cut??
