Angry stinking starter!

What the hell???
Why is it that whenever i let the car sit for a few hours.. .the starter seems to go bad? I then have to bypass the starter, and the car will turn over fine... and for about three hours after that.. the car will start fine... what the hell?

Maybe i could just run a hardwire switch from my battery to my starter... then, instead of using jumper cables.. i could just flip the switch... grrr... anyone have any suggestions?

If connections are good I'd say solenoid. Cheaper than buying a new starter.

Bridging the Starter with 12Volt Power directly, or Push-Starting.

Sounds like he does have a bad solenoid, which might have had it share of cold/hot/cold/hot sessions.

When it's heated up, the expansion inside is preventing good contact.

I sometimes have the same problem, but it's with the electrical connections.

Awwww.. Thanks Dave.
I'll go Kiss her & Rub her and tell her another man was checking her out. She does look good.

It's actually Gun-Metal Grey. But it WILL be Silver to match my other two cars when I put the Widebody on it.

Why is it that Mazda had to use those stupid solenoids with the plastic piece that pushes the gear out?!

If the starter was shot you'd get nothing except a big drain on the battery. I still say solenoid just like on the Chevy V8 get them hot and they were a nightmare. Sometimes you could and sometimes you couldn't start never consistant.

yes, the solenoid acts as a switch and when you turn the key it pulls towards the terminals to close the circuit.

can you start it at after just tapping on the starter? mine was doing the same thing, i would have to tap the starter, then it would start ok a few times, then tap the starter again. then the battery totally died and would not hold a charge. i replaced the battery and haven't had a problem since.

My vert did that recently , I just put a stick down there, and hit the stick with a hammer, and bam it would start. My 85 did the same thing once, and i got it rebuilt by a local guy (he rocks and is cheap!) and now its in the vert w/o problems

Your solenoid problem was probably caused by heat. So if Auto Zone tested the starter cold it don't mean that all is fine. Its when its hot you have the problem. Also 12volts to the starter works better than a stick.
