still wont go past 5k.

ok my car was having issues of bogging in 3rd gear at 5k and continue to bog in 4th. IT revs way past 5k in 1st and 2nd. We figured it was was spark so i got some 10.2mm Arospeed plug wires and installed them. THe old wires were aweful there was ALOT of corrosion. so i took wd-40 and steel wool and cleaned all the contacts to perfect. I go to start the car it fires up immediately! i drove it and it acts more peppy cause the wires but still wont go past 5k?

Could my coils have gone bad and just cant take it past 5k in 3rd anymore? I cant figure out my car is lacking air, fuel or spark. It cant be fuel it cause it revs past 5k in 1st 2nd with NO bogging at all! im kinda stumped any suggestions?

I was thinking of getting Accel Superstock coils.

Won't go past 5 K under heavy load.....Hmmm please check to verify that your vacume advance is working. If its not operating properly the ignition will not advance as it should. under low load (1st, 2nd gear on level gorund) this may not cause a problem, but in 3rd on up I guarantee it will

cheers

Ok now when you are parked can you revv up past 5K? cause i had a simmilar problem and I want to help out.
I checked everything I even thought that it might be my carb but then I went through a list of things , spark plug, wirres, coils, dist... ect.... but then I looked at the fuel delivery, and found out that it was a cheap gas filter that is located on the drivers side of the car behind the rear wheel you cant miss it just go and buy a "FRAM" or original MAZDA fuel filter 10$$ at most and you will not have this problem anymore..

warm up car to normal operating temps, check timing as specified in manual if incorrect adjust. then with the vacume advance hose still hooked to the dizzy slowly rev the motor and watch the timing marks. they should slowly advance as you raise the RPM's until you can no longer see the marks in relation to where the strobe is flashing.

kenn

PS do this for both leading and trailing

Loss power

does the car lack power going uphills? Somethings to check. Plugged up cats. Clogged fuel filter. Remember, under a load the engine needs more fuel and air, and has to expell the exhaust. All of these things can contribute to poor performance. 1st gens are nortorious for fuel filters clogging, especially if you are in a wetter climate. Remember to always do the basics first. I am going to assume this a carb'd, i did not read your profile. If it is, there is a chance that the spring that holds the lever in place for the secondaries to kick in has flipped over.

I'm with the doc. Doesn't sound like ignition. I bet is a simple clogged fuel filter. Or dying fuel pump. Or stuck shut secondaries. I would check in that sequence.

And talking about cats, if you have removed the rats nest, why do you have it? if you also removed the air pump, you're probably just clogging it even more.

Also your sig is confusing. You have a GSL with PS removed? AFAIK only SE models come with PS.

I have a GSL with ps. On the GSL model you could option everything except the 13B.

With the rats nest and air pump removed, I vote for clogged cats. It can happen fairly suddenly when they collapse. Being able to free rev to redline, but not getting past 5k under load is a dead giveaway on the cats.

I wouldn't bet my life on it. I've had the exact same symptoms on the exact same conditions with a) stuck secs (handled by turning them into mech secs) and b) a clogged fuel filter, solved by replacing it. And the reason I say also possibly dying fuel pump is because, well, is probably pretty old but also when I had my carter fuel pump and Holley FPR, if I dropped the pressure too much with the FPR, it would once again have the exact same symptoms.

Not betting or disagreeing. All of the potential problems areas you listed are valid. A clogged cat is where I would look first, along with the filter.

both points of view are very valid, even though he claimed to be a noob, I ***umed that with 600+ posts he would have seen a clogged fuel filter/cats thread in his time on the forum, and would have checked that due to the regularity of that particular subject coming up.

The spring on the other hand sounds interesting I have had something similiar happen with a weber IDA but it was more like stuck open at WOT

cheers

lol i have seen the the threads of clogged cats and fuel filter. I have had the fuel filter replaced in the past year so i wouldnt think it would clog again but i do drive to empty everytime so maybe so.. I guess i will get a pipe and replace the cats with it.
I did a compression test recently it was at a fair 80psi and front and back.

When you did the compression test, did you disconnect the fuel pump? Also 80psi is a dying motor but still won't affect it going past 5k.
Replace your filter again and do a fuel volume/pressure test.

For those of you who made the NYC caravan to Rotorfest you will remember that we couldnt go past 70mps or so cause of me......

When i got back to the shop I took off the cars and went at them with the impact hammer....

Now they are empty and the car runs like a bat out of hell........

I must agree with the other guys.....

Do the fuel filter first, its typical of these symptoms and is a regular part that fails, maybe cleaning out your fuel tnk would be a good idea also if its ever been sitting. 84/85 models have a fuel tanks drain plug, so when it gets low just empty it then add a little clean fuel and empty it again, then do the fuel filter and fill it with fresh gas, I have done this with my last 3 FBs and they always regain RPM in third gear at higher RPM.
