Steering Shaft Noise

Hey all,

I just put an aftermarket momo hub and wheel on my 81’. I had a lot of trouble taking off the stock steering wheel but I eventually used a puller to take it off. Now that the new wheel is on there is a weird noise that occurs when the wheel is turned. The hub doesn’t appear to sit flush either. I will like a video and photos. It is not coming from in the bay but rather from somewhere in the column I believe. I am curious if I bent my steering shaft and it is rubbing against something or if a bushing or something just got bent during the install. Any help would be appreciated

There appears to be more clearance on the left side. This would also make sense because the hub sits more flush on the right side and there is a gap on the opposite side.

See if the noise is still there with the old wheel.

Also a puller shouldn't be necessary. Just pull at 9 and 3 o'clock and it'll pop off.

The old wheel doesn’t seem to make the noise. I tried to pull it off at 9 and 3 and it would not budge so that’s why I ended up using a puller.

I had an issue where after mechanical work on the steering and reinstalling my stock steering wheel it made scraping/squeaking noises in places as it was rotated much like yours. The indicator also started not canceling properly. After several tries in locating the issue I found the "Turn Signal Switch Cancel Cam" was being pinched when the steering wheel nut was tightened. I could find no way to increase the clearance so I ended up filing down the rim and two posts of the cam about 2 millimeter.

There is also a spring under the cam to keep it pushed into the steering wheel hub and it was a pain to get it seated without popping out and rubbing.

That was the issue! I just removed mine this morning to see if that was the issue and it was. I will file those down because it would be nice to retain that. Thanks
