starting issue

i recently removed the emissons from my 12a and now im having starting issues.the car idles and drives great but its a b*&^h to start. i check compression and vaccume leaks and both ok. i did notice the dizzy cap had grove marks in the inside and the aluminum point inside where also grooved so i replaced it with the rotor. it seemed to start fine after that but then i got home checked it again and the new cap had the same prob.

anyone ever seen this before?
cause i havnt. i think it might be causing the starting problem.
any tips??

This happens and yes it will cause a starting issue. Check to make sure that the cap is sitting properly. If it still has the dist cover under the cap make sure when you install the cap that it is secure and not up on one side.
Also check the side to side play of the rotor. If there is excessive play the bushings in the dist are worn out.
But 9 out of ten times it comes down to the cap not positioned correctly at install.

You could have 2 issues. I being the dist and still have another one. Replace dist and see what happens.

I should of been clear on the dist problem. I wanted you to replace the dist to see if it took care of the problem with gouging the cap. Having the cap damaged will cause starting issues so I'm going to assume that you replaced the bad cap?
As far as the color of the plugs that is normal.
If the plugs were black it would indicate a way too rich mixture.
As far as the starting problem goes are you using the choke still to start it when it is cold?

Let me recap. You had the starting problem after the emissions were removed. You found a problem with the dist rotor and replaced it. Then the starting problem went away? Then you drove it for a short distance after the rotor install and the starting problem came back. You found the same problem that you had before with the cap and rotor. Replaced the cap and rotor but the problem is still there now?

Need a better description of the starting problem.

that sounds right.
when im trying to start the car it almost sounds like its starting on one rotor. i turn it over a few times until it feels it builds enough compression to start. once it starts it stays on just fine. i already checked compression and im at 90 front and back.

Is it harder to start after it reaches opearting temp?
Is the engine turning over relatively fast or quick then slows a bit before it starts?

Did you do the compression test at operating temp or on a cold engine?

Well, my brain is taxed right now. I recommend that you back track and recheck everything that you did when it started correctly.
Something is being missed. I know this because I do the same thing.
It's sometime best to leave it for awhile and then go back to it so you have a fresh start. :-)
